On Track of Jail Bird.
Sheritf Scott received word the
other day that Joseph L. Miller,
the man who recently broke jail,
had been seen over near Silverton,
and immediately went over to
investigate. He found very un
satisfactory clues until he found a
gentleman near Stayton, who was
employed in getting out wood for
the railroad, and who several days
before had been astonished by the
appearance oi a wiii-ureeseu
stranger of very bleached out
complexion stepping out of the
thick brush near by. At first the
stranger appeared disconcerted,
but immediately recovered his
composure and proceeded to nar
rate that be was a wood contrac
tor for the Southern Pacific, and
wanted to buy all the wood the
local men could furnish and would
do much better by them than the
railroad officials could, as lie had
a large contract to till. He wound
up by saving that he had missed
his road in looking around for
wood and had not yet breakfasted.
Of course this brought out the
best the eentleman's house af
forded for the chance of selling
the wood at an advance was
worth looking after. After tilling
up with a gooa square meal the
stranger branched out on the
wood contract agaiu and engaged
board when he should come to
make the liaal arrangements and
save directions to count the pres
ent meal in, and he would pay fur
it with the week or more board he
should want then, and took his
departure. It finally dawned
upon the woodman that he had
been impose ! upon, and his de
scription of the stranger tallies
exactly with the descirption of
Joseph I'. Aluler.

other similar enterprise now in
existence, and their continual in
crease in size, a tractivenei-s an I
popularity is a fair sign of health
and longevity, l'he Messrs. Sells
are legitiriate, enterprising show

whom it is both uleasnrabie and
profitable to do busine-s. Thuir
big circus arrived in Albany early
this morning and will show to-day,
afternoon and evening on the open
ground beyond the Southern Paci

their wild beast, hippodroniatic,
circus, specular and other resources
of instruction and amusement
have been largely increased, and
they undoubtedly present alto
gether the biggest and best show
of its kind in the world. They
manage it in person, and it is so
conducted as to deserve and ob
tain universal popularity and pa

of morality substitute immoral
apings of ancient debauchery for

well profit by their example, and
abandon their more questionable
efforts to "revolutionize the show

Tht Oroaida Being Improved for tht Big
Opening Stpt 14-
Contracts have been signed and
work commenced putting in the
electric light system at the state
fair grounds. 'This will be a great
protection to the exhibits at night.
It w ill cost about $"0 and will
enable the fair to be throw n open
at niht, and possibly afford hoise
races by electric light.
The Society, says the Salem
Journal, has had a small army of
men at work on the grounds near
ly all the year. The underbrush
in the big grove was all removed,
and the trees trimmed up at an
expense of $400, so that it presents
the appsarance of a pretty oak
park. About a hundred old build
ings on the fair grounds proper,
have been taken dow n and carted
away. They were useless, un

something better. In all the re
pairs and general clean-up, nearly
$o0;'-0 has been expended.

all finished up inside, so that

There will be four new water
closets built. All the buildings,
except oa the "race course have
been painted in bright colors.
The G. A. K. Women will run

result of his labors.
The electric railroad has spent
several thousand dollars in tracks
and platforms on the grounds and
has virtually built a first-class
steel-rail line of over a mile for
the special benefit of the state
fair. No fair grounds in America
is better equipped with transpor
tation facilities than this. Vesti
bulegcars w ith the trailer run Ling
twenty miles an hour, will carry
the public back and forth every
ten minutes, during fair week.
A number of nice new cottoges
will be built on the grounds before

baseball grounds will prove a great
additon to the fair.
