Last Popular Excursion.
The announcement of the last
cheap excursion of this season to
to Newport has caused a rush for
tickets, and no doubt the largest
crowd of the year will leave to
morrow morning for the seaside
The management has been able,
through the kindness of the O. P.
R. R. Co.'s officials, to allow all
who wish the privilege of remain
ing over uhtil either Monday or
Tuesday, which will be highly
appreciated by many who other
wise would be unable to partici
pate in the varied pleasures
alforded by a brief visit to the
ocean beach. The salmon fishing
season is now at its height and
many fine Chinooks are daily cap
tured in Yaciuina bar. The surt
is warm and pleasant, and as the
undertow so common at the other
ocean resorts has never been felt
at Newport, the bather may enjov
a dip in the waves without
danger. Train will leave Albany
at 7 a. m., arriving at Newpoit at
1,1 a. m., returning, leave Newport
at 5:30 and arriving at Albany at
j:30 i'. m. Fare for round trip,
$2.50, including boat fares. Tick
ets on sale at w ells, r aigo & Co. s
office and at the train on its de
parture.

The hot winds of the past two
I weeks in uilliam county have
damaged to some extent the crops
in that section. Fall wheat is, of
course, uninjured, but spring
wheat that was at all late has
suffered severely. In some in
stances where the wheat had not
commenced to harden before the
hot winds ca'ne the crop is en
tirely blighted and will not even
make good hay. The Fosnti
Journal declairs that no matter
what the season may be in that
country it has been satisfactorily
proven that a fall-sown crop is the
thtl only sure crop in
the country, and fanners
should govern themselves accord
ingly. The Roseburg Review says:
Our peach crop is going to wist for
want of a fruit cannery. Tae
fruit grjwers of the count- may
wake up to the importance of
such an enterprise after this year.

Grants Pass Courier: Georgie,
the two-year eld boy of Fred Ben
son, was drowned in a spring on
his father's place near Kerby on
Sunday atternoon. It appears the
child had been playing with an
uncle of h's, twelve years old, and
they had both been absent some
time from the house and when
search was instituted the, lift less
body of the infant was found in
the spring. Prof. Benson came in

The allotment of land among
the Indians on the Umatilla reser- j
vation is progressing smoothly
and there have been low disputes
for the commissioners to decide
The Indians are not so prone to
dispute as their white brothers,
says the Pendleton Last-Oregon-
lan. it two want the same piece

with the remark : "You take this
and I'll get another." White

stances, would probably tight,
figuratively speaking, until tne

Under Suspicion.
An Exchange says that a prom
inent rancher of Grant county,
named John Austin, and his man.
John Guthridge, were arreeted in
Pendleton Sunday evening, charg
ed with the larceny of a steer.
The men were just about to ship
thirthy-six head of ctttle from the
Union Pacific stockyards at Pen
dleton. Suspicion attached to
them because seven head of them
bore the Lux & Miller brand, and
this firm is not in the habit of sell
ing cattle iu small lots. It is also
claimed that several other brands
have been Been among the bunch
and that the men acted as if they
wished to make a hurried ship
ment and avoid attention. Austin
claims he bought the cattle from
several persons in the John Day
country. The men were committ
ed to the county jail pending an
examination.
Went to Portland.
Salem Statesman: Tho Three
Sisters went down to Portland
yesterday morning with a small
load of freight. A good many
passengers were taken below, sev
eral of them going to St. Paul to
work on the convent. The boat
ing stage continues just passable
for vessels of light draft, but with
a little work on the part of the
suagboat they could get along
without any trouble. A few-
snags need pulling and if several
of the worst bars were scraped
navigation would be decidedly
easier.
THE C0DH1T JAIL,
It is Only a Mutter of a Few Days Werk
for a Prisoner to Escape.
What is the matter with Linn
county jail? If a prisoner gets
tired of his abode it is only a mat
ter of a few hours of work and he
is out in the world again. W. W.
Saunders dug his way out and it
took $1,500 to get him back again
enough to construct cages from
which no living man could escape.
Others have escaped and once but
for perfidy of a prisoner a whole
sale )a:l break would have been
recorded a few years ago. The
hinges on which the iron doors
hang were sawed oil' and it only
remained to lift the door aside and
walk out. But one of the prison
ers gave the plan away and the
thing was nipped at the last
moment. Why cannot cells be
put in the jail, so that when a man
goes in there is some guarantee
that he is going to stay, witheut
being watched day and night.
The sheriff of Liun county has
manifold duties that require his
attention, and cannot be here,
there and everywhere and keep
his eye on our makeshift jail. Is
it not false economy to pay out a
1 1000 or nure every two or three
years to capture escaped criminals
when that amount would make
escape impossible it properly ued.
llie county coiumi.-sioners ex
amined the jjii about a week "be
fore the last escape was made, and
vet two prisoners walked out,
leaving only an old case knife with
teeth notched in it to tell the tale.
If a prisoner can gain his liberty
so easily it is high time something
was done. '
A Poor Waif.
Rockford Enterptise: The
steamer Stella, on Medical Lake,
tied a few feet from the water's
edge at the landing Monday night,
rocked a little castaway to sleep
while all Medical Lake a'ept
except an unfortunate woman.
The son of Mr. William Miller,
the owner of the steamty, discov
ered the waif when he went to
the boat early in the morning to
lire up. It was a new-born boy,
wrapped in a blak shawl and was
not larger than a loaf oi bread.
Pinned to the shawl was the fol
low ing letter, written in a fem
inine hand evidently :
"Kind boatman, will you please
be kind enough to take this little
infant to . the orphan asylum at
Spokane? Within the shawl is
f5. It is all I have. If the child
dies place a notice in the Spokane
Review so that 1 may know of it.
If it lives and I am ever able I
will take it . and be s mother to it."
Later the infant was taken to
the Spokane orphanage, and
finally its mother, a Mrs. Brown,
made herself known.
