Mr. Wm. M. Hoag, vice-presi

shall have t'hair pay. As far as he
is concerned in the matters of the
road everyone believes that, and
moreover that their wages would
never have been in arrears if he
could have controlled the affairs.
The troubla is that the cmbroglio
in New York where the control
has always been has mixed matters
so that the arrearages in wages
have accumulated. It is to be
hoped that ttie affairs will be
straitened out and the em
ployes paid beiore it gets any far

should not only be promptly paid

Railroad comxissioh.
Th Effect of the Dilligtnt Work of the
total ignorance, or from
a partisanship that cares for no
other object than to gain a success
for its party, there are many
papers throughout the state that
are inveighing against the railroad
commission, and parroting Gov
ernor Pennoyer's cry for its abol
ishment. That there is a call for some
power to stand between the peo
ple on the one B'de and the rail
road power to charge all there is
in the traffic on the other side,
every individual who knows any
thing about thesubiect knows anu
acknowledges. And further it has
been conceded that a well-equippeu
aid properly supported commis
sion can best supply that need,
Governor Pennoyer to the contrary
notwithstanding.
The question resolves itselt into
one point then : shall the present
efficient railroad commission re
ceive the support And encourage
ment that will sustain it in its
laudable work, or will the suppos
ed chance for partisan advance
ment cause the clogging of the
work and the hindering of the ac
complishment of any good?
The cry is raised that the com
mission are doing no good and
hold sinecure offices. But do the
ones who raise that cry know what
they are talking about? No; or
else they willfully prevaricate for
partisan purposes only.
In the first place the commis
sion has carefully, laboriously and
intelligently inspected every line
of railroad in the state, and made
requirements for repairs and im
provements, that have been fol
lowed up and performed by the
companies which may save several
accidents, perhaps, that would
have been as fatal as the Lake
Labish affair. These benefits, ol
course, cannot be appreciated for
they are not in sight, but they are
nevertheless substantial and of
great worth.
In the second place tbe commis
sion have been hard at work upon
the passenger and freight rates, to
get them regulated to the best in
terests of all parties interested. In
one little particular, where they
caused the Union Pacific road to
correct their passenger schedules
running into and out of Portlaud,
they have made a difference in the
fares to passengers that will more
than cover their salaries. Then
the last schedules of freight rates
that they have prepared for the
Southern Pacific lines, which
promise to go into effect at the
time set, the 1st of September, will
save many thousands of dollars to
the producers of the country.
The schedules make a reduction
of 10 per cent, on wheat, flour and
feed, and even greater reductions
on other commodities.
The railroad may contest the
matter and attempt to delay until
alter tbe present crop is over, but
the prospect is that they will not,
for if they do the outcome foi
them will be unpleasant in nature.
It will simply mean that the next
legislative action will be a maxi
mum rate bid. and a further re
duction in the passenger tariff.
It is not wise to monkey with a
buz, saw, anu the feelings of the
people are just at that point, where
it will take but little more for them
to set in motion a buzz saw that
will cut and slash in a fearful man
ner. A cool judgment and a wise
course on the part of the railroad
oiuciais at iuib time may avert
much trouble in the future.

The directors of the Milton,
Umatilla county, school district
concluded, as the pupils numbered
more than the one room would ac
commodate, to add another story
to the house to give room enough.
The patrons of the school were
differently minded however, and
wanted a room built on the
ground floor, and therefore de
cided to put an injunction upon
the second story room. Directors
must remember they are servants
of the people.

Walton, Or., Aug. 11.
Since writing last, quite a num
ber of events have occurred that
were worthy of note, but being eo
busy with my hay crop and other
matters I have not had time to
note the events in their season.
The Rev. Kelms passed through
our settlement making a visit to
the coast. On his way down lie
stopped at Walton, from July lGth,
to 20th, and preached seven ser
mons, and on his return July 20
he preached two s miotic, aid
during the series oi meetings he
baptized thirteen, and organized
a church of about forty-six mem
bers. We have Sunday school,
social meeting, and Christian En
deavor Society on each Sunday,
sc our Sundays are the busiest dav
of the week.
July 24th, the Chk-ahomony,
and Walton schools, joined in an
exhibition, and school picnic
which was very large'y attended
and the best of order prevailed,
good music, good order, good din
ner, good declamations and tbe
picnic was a grand success.
On last Saturday the neighbors
took the Barbour family by sur
prise, by about tweuty-eix going
in on them unawares, taking their
dinner with them and having the
Barbours to act as their guest.
Again we had excellent music,
good singing and a good dinner,
and a good time generally. Aaron
says he would like to be surprised
thai: way again.
In the meantime the devil is
getting in his work. A young man
that claimed to belong to a family
in merry old England, but now
styles himself, the cow boy (a dis
grace to the cow) came into the
Christain Endeavor meeting with
a broad brimmed hat on his head,
a vile cigarette between his lips,
and a very large, murderous look
ing revolver strapped across his
hip; aftei ward he went down the
river ten miles below here to a
dance at Jasen Nealy's and got in
a row with some one and drew
that murderous looking revolver,
but it proved to be empty. He
then went in the house and got
William Ncaly s rule and started
out to finish bis dirty work, when
young Nealy threw him down and
took the gun from him; he then
took a walk. If the wealthy families
of England starts any more such
young men to this country it
would be better for her credit to
make shark food of them befote
they get here.
Two other muscular encounters
took place one terminated in a
lively foot race and biijody nose,
the other in large theats and loud
talk.

The Ouentiou of the Hour,
And one that is frequently
asked Mr. Wisdom, "what is it in
your Robertine that produces such
a delightfully cooling and refresh
ing sensation and adds a most
delicate tint to the complexion?"
to which we answer: It is a
combination of rare and harmless
ingredients scientifically prepared.
There enters into the comjxjsition
of this article ingredients which
Lave never before been used in
prepartions of this kind, hence
the effect is so strikingly different
from that produced by all other
toilet remedies. The powders
used in the composition of Kobcrt
ine are all of the very smoothest
and finest diviaon it is posible to
pro.luce, futher more each and
every ingredient must stand the
crucical test of chemical purity,
insuring freedom from all foreign
and deleterious substances. Thus
with rare and harmless ingredients
of the very finest division it is
possible to make all of absolute
purity and combined with scientilic
precision, it is but natural that
we should produce a superior
article and one that has long been
aptly termed the "Peerless Heauti
fier." For sale by Fodhay &
