THE KANSAS FARMERS.
The Kansas farmers has recent
ly been a great political kicker.
At one time he voted nearly solid
ly for republican candidates for
office, but in 1SIM) he bolted the
ticket and without intending to do
so went over to the enemy. Tiie
enemy, who is never veiy careful
in making statements, declared
that the Kansas farmer was out of
the traces because the McKinley
bill had raised the cost of living,
and that 1 e would never again
rally around the protection flag,
but the evidence on the subject
was conflicting to a degree, and
compelled rational democrats to
aJinit that the problem was a
puzzling one, and that things were
not w hat they seemed at first
blush.
The truth about the situation in
Kansas is not difficult to discover

The farmers of that state have had
bad luck for several years, and as
a consequence have run behind
hand. Like all men in that condi
tion they have struggled to help
themselves and have eagerly
grasped at the first thing which
seemed to present a remody for
their troubles. When told that
they had been hard hit by the
McKinley bill they did not closely
inquire whether the charge was
true. Their minds simply dwelt
on thejone patent fact that some
thing iiad hit them, and they were
not overparticular how they struck
back.
But now that the situation has
altered, the Kansas farmer, who,
when not excited or ihscou raged,
reasons very1 intelligently, will be
V'in to ask himself whether he did
not act very foolishly in taking
democratic and socialistic as
sertions too seriously. Xow that
the price of wheat, corn and other
agricultural products has gone up
to a paying figure he will probably
realize that it was low prices that
were hurting him and not high
prices as the free traders falsely
asserted. In the calm engendered
by prosperity he will he able to
discover that his debt oppressed
him because the harsh elements
conspired to prevent production,
and that unless the soil produces
crops for the farmer he cannot j
raise money to meet his obliga
tions. While in this sane state he
will also be able to study price
lists and appreciate the fact that
while everything he raises is
higher nearly everything he is
comielIed to buy has declined in
price. When the knowledge of
these tilings dawns upon him fully
ho will say, to the devil with the
PetTers and free traders, and
hurrah for the policy of protection
and the republican party, which
lias made the United Mates a
great ami prosperous nation.

Journal says that "John W. Book
waiter, who ownes (iO.ojo acres of
land in Nebraska, proposes to in
ltiatea great reform in farm life,
at an expense ofro.OHO or $100,000
to be met out of his own purse. His
plan is to overcome the farmers'
discontent, which he believes to be
due mainly to social isolation, by
bringing the homes together into a
tastefjtly arranged village near
each one's land, instead of having
them on the individual farms.
He has already started the experi
ment on a small e-ale, and says:
"I am going to build a town hall
and establish a free circulating
in rrt , . .

among the farmers of France,
Spain, Italy and Switzerland, and
is a great success." That sounds
very nice and philanthropic, but
if John W. BookwaUer, or any
other man who makes money out
of pure speculating in the prairie
lands of the western states, enters
into any such scheme they intend
to more than recoup themeelves
out of the increased value of their
lands. The are a very philanthro
pic set.
Kx-Sknator Ingalla told a pro
hibition audience on Staten Illand
on the 1st. hist, that after ten
yeara of prohibition in Kansas
''there is no town in that state
where a man cannot get all the
liquor he wants. There is no or
ganized municipal corporation that
is not supported by tinea on the
liquor trallic, the entire expenses
of hia own town of Atchiaon be
ing met "by a tax or fine or
license levied every month on
those who are known by ths
authorities to be engaged in the
sale of intoxicating liquors con
trary to law." He then spoke of
the situation in another prohi
bition state, Iowa, where in the
city of Council Bluffs, of some
50,000 people, he had been reliably
informed there are more than 200
places where liquor is openly and
avowedly sold, the municipal ex
penses being largely paid for by
fines levied each month on men
engaged in the traffic.
The peculiarities of the bank
robber in Columbus, Ohio, set
him down as not only green at the
business but as being a reckless
fiend in human shape. With two
fully loaded revolvers in his hands
he held the cashier and another
man at bay, keeping in the back
ground until the cashier had
emptied his pistol and was power
less, and firing all the time not
only at the cashier but at passersby
one of whom, a farmer, he killed.
Then seizing w hat money he could
reach rushed out, running at the
top of hia speed but with pursuers
on Ins track. He succeeded in
eluding them but will eventually
be taken or killed, and all for a
few paltry dollars.
