On the subject of striking, :ind
the influence ai.d results that
have arisen therefrom, one can
not help contrasting the wise.
nuLite unit manly action of the em
ployees of the Oregon Pacific rail
road, in their present attitmle
,3 ffarils their employers, with that
of many of the railroad strikes in
the country that have given bo
much trouble, and in some in
stances ltd to destruction of
property and even bloodshed.
The employees of the Oregon Pa
cific have more pressing grievances
than anvl that have heretofore
culminated in strikes, but they
practically use onh arbitration
methods, manfully but firmly and
legally apply for their withheld
pay, without disturbing the rights
privileges or comfort of any per
B in. The Chronicle in comment
ing upon a case that h is arisen in
that state gives home geneial !
criticising ujn s.rikes that
are pertinent, and that make the
action of our railroad men appear
nobler and wiser than ever. It
styathatit bus a communication
from the secretary of the ware
house and lumbermen's Union of
Uarijuinez straits in w hich a vigor
ous protest is made against the
action of a number of em ploy tit
who have agreed that "any man
leaving their employ through or
granied labjr disturbance shall
not receive employment from any
of the subscribers to the agree
ment.". This the secretary de
nounces as autocratic in the
extreme and worthy of the C.ar
of Kussia. We do not know the
details of the diiliculty between
Starr it Co., and their employes,
and regret that one exists. But
we think that the Warehouse and
Lumberman's Union w ill recognize j
the fact, if they give the subject
Herio'13 attention, that employers
in uniting, as they have done, are
only imitating their employes,
who insist that all workingmen
must stand together. We think
the workingmen are making a
great mistake by resorting to
menace instead of arbitration to
settle their difficulties with em
ployers, and have no hesitation
about expressing the opinion that
the boy cot is a dangerous weapon,
calculated to do more mischief to
those resorting ttTit than to those
against whom it is directed. Km
ployer and employed have a com
mon interest, and must wmk to
gether if they wish to succeed,
but what this common interest is
will never lo determined by
fighting; the only way to ascertain
it is by arbitration.
Dke3 reform is one of the ideals
that enthusiastic women have been
working for all the years that
have gone by, and all for naught
so far. The only end attained lias
been to cast ridicule upon the ad
vocates who have had the courage
to embody their ideas by a practi
cal application in every day life.
. . i
Mine lasnion geis up some very
peculiar things, but nevertheless
her dominion is absolute and dress
reformers must gtt her dictum iu
their favor before they can succeed.
The Chronicle finds that a "num
ber of ladies iu Huston projose to
aijpt a highly sensible and not
nnpicture'pie costume fr wet
and stormp.-weather. It will not
suggest Mrs. Mary Walker'? panta
loons, but will be a haudy garb to
get around iu on a wet day and
save women from the annoyance
and untidiness of bedraggled
skirts. The details are simple,
and embrace a jacket, something
similar to the garment known as a
reefer, a skiit reaching an inch or
two below the knees, made of
heavy cloth and kilted so as to
prevent disarrangement by the
wind, and inousjuetaire or ordi
nary riding-boots or gaiters with
leggings, i Jn such a rig woman
could bid detiance to the elements,
and would look as if she had a
right to be out of doors on a
stormy day, an appearance she
does not present when arrayed in
the existing street costumes, most
of which would be more appropri
ate for indoor use than the pur
jmisc to which they are put."
Now, if dame fashion will only
say so that costume will be all the
rage.
Bl ii.ijino and Loan Associations
have become greatly in favor all
over the United States. As local in
stitutions and whei carried on ac
cording to the just and business
rules of such associations they
give a saf-3 sure and profitable in
vestment for money, and also offer
a better chance for boriowing
money for making improvements
for men of a mill means than any
other sources. It is remarkable
tLat the confidence men have let
these institutions alone as long as
they have, but it seems they have
finally taken hold of the business,
as a fraudulent one has )ut been
closed ut. in Chicago after having
successfully lleeced people all ovei
the country out of hundieds of
thous.uit.ts.
Oovernors Ferry and 1'ennoyer
are havinz a tilt over the refusal
of the latter to honor the reqnfsi
tion of the former for the sur
render of Cushing and wife. '.iov.
Ferry may have the best of the
argument but (.iov. Pennoyer will
hold to the same opinion still if
the heavens fall.
Iris said that Kudyard Kiplin
