The Albany woolen mills have
purchased this season 230,000
pounds of wool. The mills are
running steadily, and will manu
facture more than that amount
during the next year.
Kev. Father Metayer, of Albany,
who has been at the hospital at
Portland for some time, has so far
recovered from his severe illness
as to be able to go to the Siskiyou
mountains a here he will remain
until he is able to resume hit
ministerial duties.
They Are Tstlent Men.
The employees of the Oregon
Pacific railroad have shown great
patience and moderation in wait
ing six months without pay, says
the Evening lelcirram. It is
doubtful whether these virtues
have not been carried even a little
lot far. Perhaps it would have
been better for themselves, and
the road, too, if they had insisted
on monthly payments. The com
pany ought to spare no efforts to
raise the money at once.- Such
delay is almost a public evil. It
grows to inconvenience a great
many innocent parties besides the
parties to whom the money is due.

Ou last Tuesday a little son of
J. S. Shaw bal a narrow escape
from death by falling in front of
the Sftntiam Lumbering Co.'s cars
on the other side of the river, savs
the Mill City Gazette. Will Hob
son and the boy were on the cars
with a large load of logs and had
the car been going at full speed
there is but very little doubt but
that instant death would have
been the result. As it is the boy
is only badly bruised on the side.

Tee Farmer's Wsrthoat Will Beceire
Over 400,000 BusieU tbii Beaton.
Yesterday afternoon twenty
loads of wheat were wailing at one
time at the farmer's warehouse to
oe received. Already this ware
house has received 1400 bushels of
new wheat, and it is coming in
very fast. They have also let out
100.000 sacks to farmers which
represents about 400,000 bushels of
wheat, as nearly all the sacks win
be used twice for the fall and
spring wheat. Farmers report an
average of about 30 bushels to the
acre, although some fields yield
forty, lhe wheat is ot very tin'
quality, being plump and heavy
Seventy-five cents per bushel is
being paid at present, and with
the lar'e crop and good prices
larmers will have plenty ot money
the country will enjoy better times

Friday afternoon, a long line
of wagons, teams, and grading
machines passed through Salem,
headed south says the Statesman
1 Here were about two dozen men
and twenty-three head of stock in
the procession, and the entire out-
tit had the appearence of being
ready to attack a good sized job
of railroad grading. Speculation
as to the objective point of the
men and teams was rife, but none
of the fond hopes of rumored rail
road building in this vicinity
were given an opportunity to
meet relization, lor the entire line
turned south on the Turner road.
They camped last night just this
side of the reform school, on Mill
creek, and proceed on to-day to
Lebanon, where they have a con
tract of ditch digging. It was the
grading outfit of Thomas Price, of
Albina. Mr. Price has the con
tract for digging a ditch from
Santiam to Lebanon, to be used
in supplying the mills and factories
of that city with water power.
The ditch will be four miles in
length and will cost about thirty
live thousand dollars. About fifty
men will be engaged in the work
and the contractors expect to
complete the work in about ninety
days. The graders left Albina
Thursday morning.
Albany's Iloee Team.
Albany Engine Co. No. 1 has
organized a hose team to contest
for the prizes at the fireman's
tournament at Victoria, 'lhe
boys are going in to win and have
a good team. At a meeting of the
company W. II. Warner was
elected manager, and anything
that gentleman takes hold is sure
to be a success.
Last Evening's Play.
The play last evening did not
come up to the expectations of the
audience, although some features
were very good. Newton Beers is
an actor of no small talent, and
Miss Jessie Randolph pleased the
audience. The scene, Job's
Vision, was beautiful, the play
is a simple store of woman's
weakness and a man's devotion.

this season, of the popular excur
sions wid be given from Albany to

Willamette.
Mr. William C. Stevens, chief
clerk in Major Handbury's ollice,
returned yesterday from a visit to
the Upper Willamette to see what
progress the snag boat Corvall s is

boat, wiiich has been thoroughly
repaired, is in charge of Captain
Raabe, late o( the steamer lloajr.
Captain Uaabe bus been on the
Upper lllamette for twenty-one
years, and is familiar witn every
snag and shoal in these waters.

boat. IL began work at Harris
burg and has cleared a channel as
he came down, having removed
over 300 snags during the past
month. As Captain Raabe is so
familiar wi h the upper Willamette
and is interet-ted in its improve

money spent has been laid nut to
the very best advantage, and that
every wing-dam built and every
snag removed will benefit the
channel. The river is low, and
the Corvallis drawing only eighteen
inches of water just scraped over
the bar below Corvallis. It may
be expected that the boating on
the upper river will be better next
winter than it has been for a long
time

Wheat is quoted in Pendleton at

A little girl by the name of Emily
Laughlin met with a sad death in
Pendleton, Sunday by being burn
ed. It appears that she had been
playing with matches and had
built a small lire in the yard, from
which her clothing ignited.
When discovered she was totally
enveloped in flames.
While the train of Sells Bros.'
great show was near Hilgard
Saturday night a draw head of one
car was pulled out, and an employe
of the circus who was sitting on
the car was thrown to the ground
savs the East-Oreonian. He fell
lengthwise with the track between
the rails, and it was supposed that
he was killed, but when the tram
was stopped he w as pulled ut from
under the car. when it was found
that lie had not been injured at
all. the only damage being that
he lost the tail of his coat whicl
was cut offbv the wheels.
An Astoria dispatch of Thursday
says the heavy shortage in the 1801
salmon pack oius lair to be niuci
less than has been predicted, and
if the August catcli comes any
where near that ot the past ten
days, the pack will be about th
same as last year. Cannery men
estimate the pace at the present
time at from 22,000 to 00,000 cases

A crowd of about sixty men at
Snohomish, went to the residence
of Father Guay last night, took
him from the house, administered
a liberal coat of tar and feattiers,
and gave him twenty-four hours to
leave town, me party consisted
of many prominent citizens, both
Protestants and Catholics.
Guay's crimes have thoroughly
demoralized the town, and the
feeling against him is so strong that
with difficulty the crowd was pre
vented from lynching him.
Yaiiulna'e Serf Bathing.
Dr. M. A. Fhnn and wne came
back from Yaquina, where they
spent two weeks in a very pleas
ant manner, savs the Evening
Telegram. The doctor says there
is no pleasanter or sater place lor
ocean bathing than at lauuina
bay. He says he saw mere chil
dren bathing in the surf with per
fect safety. There is no undertow
and nothing to endanger life.

Wanamaker's New Office Desk.
A unique feature has been add
ed to his otlice desk, the addition
being the suggestion of Mr. Wan
amaker, and the out growth of his
daily experience in administration
of his exacting ollice. Instead of
the usual cloth top, a large plate
glass covers the surface of the
desk, and beneath it is a map of
the United States, showing parts
of Canada A Mexico. A writing
pad rests upon the glass, and there
are the customary desk fittings, as
well as the papers, which are
usually found in the workshop of
a busy man like Mr. Wanamaker.
The map shows the counties in
each state, the principle cities
and towns, the lines of railways,
etc., and when visitors talk to
Mr. Wanamaker about the post
routes and Postothces he can fol
low them on the map which is
spread out before his eves aB he

Company have advertised to re
ceive bids for the freighting of
mill machinery from Gatesville
to Quartzville, If, as some say,
the Albany Mining Co. will not
work their mines, it is hard to
account for such actions. But
they will work their mines, and
for this purpose a fine quartz mill
was recently purchased, and the
stamps will be running this fall.
