MIDS17M HER I 'A SI TIES.
A gentleman in middle life, the
father of a family, was congratu
lated recently by a flippant giri up
on the fact of the absence from
the city of his wife and family and
the opportunity presented for hav
ing a good time. This gentleman,
an eminently sensible man, replied
to her: "My dear young lady,
what is there that a gentleman
can do while his family are away
to have what you call a ,'ood
time'
1 he question is a more serious
and important one than may ap
pear upon its faje. It can hardly
be assumed that all men, no mat
ter what their ages or tastes may
be, belong to the "razzle-dazzle"
contingent; that they find their
highest, or, indeed, any pleasure,
in sitting up at all hou.s of the
night whooping it up witli the
boys and helping them paint the
town red. Nor is it credible that
all men enjoy drinking theinsel.es
stupid every ' night, or devoting
Jeir evenings to pleasures even
uestionable. These are among
the follies of youth, which society
condones, perhaps unwisely, on
the score of ignorance and callow
ness, but which it will not excuse
in men of mature years.
It is probable that the young
lady in question spoke from pure
ignorance and from the idea that
many girls entertain that uen
havd some mysterious methods
of finding enjoyment which they
refuse to disclose to the other sex.
In this connection the San Fran
cisco Chronicle proceeds to read a
somewhat astonishing lecture,
when it says:
Women, and especially yoang
women, seem to regard the world
as a huge secret society to which
men are admitted l-y virtue of
their being men, and from which
wouien are rigorously excluded.
They fancy that within this uni
versal lodge there go on scenes
which are wildly entrancing and
highly delightful, and as the un
known is always exaggerated, they
conceive of men's pleasures when
freed from restraint as something
nearly approaching the joys of the
New Jerusalem. Older wotnen are
not so apt to make this mistake, but
even thev are a little timorouri
sometimes, even though ' they
know they can turn their husbands
inside out as easily as a glove, and
that the partners of their joys and
sorrows can no more keep a secret
from them than they can ily.
But all this does not answer the
question, what can the married
man whose family are awav do
with himself in his leisure
moments or hoars? Of course he
call dine with his formr com
panions; he can go the theatre;
lie can call on his wife's relations,
and, in an emergency, upon ladies
of his acquaintance whom an un
kind fate has kept in town. But
he soon gets through this round of
mild dissipation and is tlnown up
on his own resources, and then
what is l e to do with himsell?
It was suggested, not long ago
inian Eastern journal that the an-
' A . 1 A 1? . t
swer to tne question lies in the
revival of the ancient custom of
polygamy, or at least of bigamy,
it being proposed that the law be
bo amended as to make it lawful
for a man to have a summer if
while the original spouse is away
in the country. Of course there
are some objections to the plan,
but it really seems ta present
more desirable and agreeable
features than any other scheme
vet auiurested. It is not good for
man to be alone, and if the mater-
familias betakes herself and the
family to the seaside or the moun
tains or the lakes, why should not
the law provide for a deputy
materfamilias, who ehall keep
alive the sacred fire upon the
hearthstone of domesticity, and
see that the lares and i enates are
dusted and kept in there proper
places? Unless some such system
as this can receive the sanction cf
law and the approval of public
sentiment the question which
forms the beginning of this contri
bution to tbe social studies of the
da)' must remain unanswered.
Such sentiments coming from
prominet newspaper exhibits a
deplorable conditions of things in
the minds of a portion of this
great country. Fortunately the
above semi-sarcastic philosophy
find but few devotees, else our
social fabric would not long iuain
a'n is purity and strength.
Tiik Denver Times recently
addressed a circular to the leading
republican editors of Colorado,
asking them to name their
favorite candidate for president.
Twenty rep'.ies were received,
as follows: Blaine, 11 ; Harrison,
3; 'Jresham, 1 ; Wolcott, 1; Cul
lom, 1 ; Teller, 1. No choice 2.
It is likely, however, that Ben
Harrison will aain be the party's
nominee, notwithstanding the
wishes of the Colorado editors
That is certainly the way the
iiolitical horizon looks out here
in Oregon at present.
