THE W1IEA T CHOI'S.
To the citizen of Oregon the
Status of the market for the lead
ing cereal is the .most vital ques-
tion that comes up for considera
tion. What will he the ruling
price is what every person is
anxious to know for every person
is either directly or indirectly in
terested in the crop. The Phila
delphia Itecord, of recent date
says : "The world's wheat situa
tion promises an enormous ex
pansion of the foreign grain trade
of the United States during the
coming year. This will neces
parily have an important hearing
on the future of wheat prices in
this county. Values ju-t no. v are
slightly lower than they were a
year ago, and the markets for
some little time to come will feel
the- effect of the pressure oi the
heavy early movement of
of the new crop. The later tend
ency of values may he affected hv.
the increasing exports anirthe
hullish Bentiinent in the trading
community that such foreign
trade conditions usually foster.
As the Record has already pointed
out, this country exported irom its
comparatively short wheat yield
of last year over 100,000,000 bu
shels of wheat and Hour. If that
much could be spared at moderate
prices in the face of a shortage
of over 500,000,000 bushels in the
production of corn, and of a big
deficiency in the yield of oats and
other crops that necessarily tended
to advance the cost of all cereals,
there is no good reason why the
larger foreign demand of the
present season should not be met
without a very marked or rapid
advauce in values, since all crops
this year promise more
abundant harvests than those of
last year. The most conservative
estimates do not place the wheat
yield below 540.000,000 bushels:
and as last season's estimates of a
crop yield of oS9,000,000 bushels
proved to be several millions be
low, the actual yield, there is a
probability that the present esti
mates of the 1S01 crop will be
exceeded when the tinal outcome
shail be known.' While, however,
it might be possible for this coun
try to do the enormous export
business that is now indicated
without a speculative advance in
prices, such a contingency would
be extremely improbable. There
have already been sold for foreign
ehiprnent, according to trade esti
mates, something like 50,000,000
bushels of new wheat to go out
during the next three or four
months; and it would he a sur
prjse to many if these contracts
should all he tilled, with the
additional business that may be
done in the interval, without a
liurry in the speculative markets.
Such a result might be deprecated
on moral and business grounds;
but its probability under the con
ditions indicated is recognized,
and the teeling tliat short sellin
i wncar. is oy no means a sure
winning speculation is already
extant m the grain trade."
Aj Los Anoki.ks man, to escape
the panijs of the toothache and
the horrors of the dentists mai.ipn
lation, committed suicide. The
Chronicle thinks that people who
have enjoyed that kind of sensa
tions, will understand the feelings
that prompted the act. There are
few ailments which have so de
moralizing an influence upon the
nerves as a lon-continued aud
severe toothache, accompanied by
loss oi sleep. When to this is
added the agony of the dentist's
chair, which not all the modern
appliances of dental surgery have
been able to wholly remove, it is not
ditlicult to understand why a man
should be tempted to fly from such
ills even to those lie knows not of.
pKoiiAui.Y the resignation of M.
S. luay, of Pennsylvania, of the
chairmanship of the national re
publican committee, will cause
the democratic political journals
considerable annoyance, as it re

their campaign subjects. They

Pacific road for a more reasonable
rate on lumber to Colorado pdints,
will be met in Chicago by the
Western Trallic Association, to
consult upon the matter. The com
mittee from Portland consist of
II. 11. Duniway, J. L. Bradley and
David Ferris. The pro6ects of
gaining anything -by the action
are slim, as a Taconii committee
for the- same purpose signally
failed. If the Oregon Pacific were
completed across the mountains
and would make reasonable rat.es
of transportation it would do
much to bring about a better
state of affairs in the lumber ship
ping business.
Tiik fear of a called session of
the Wasl ihg5n legislature, to en
act what is known as the Wascoui
bill which cut the rates for rail
road transportation on produce,
has caused the Northern and
Union Pacific roads to adopt a new
schedule reducing the rates over 11
per cent. They w ill probably say
that thev were intending to
take the action any way,
but the facts are they were forced
into it, and it may not save
the from a called session
Through Train.
Notice has been given that com
mencing on Saturday, July 18, the
the train to the front, on the Ore
gon Pacific, will run clear through
