The recent anti-missionary riot.s
iti China biing up anew the tines
tion of the wisdom of attempting
to Christianize a race whose re
ligion ia far older than that which
they are asked to accept in its
Etead. The same amount of money
that is expended in establishing
missions of questionable utility in
far-otr China would do ten times
the good in Christianizing the
heathen of ur own cities. When
it can be said that there arc entire
counties in California without
regular religious worship, it would
seem that the Chinese might with
considerable force of reason use
the retort "Physician heal thy
self" to those who are so extremely
solicitous for his spiritual welfare.
Tue claim that Germany will
refuse to take any part in the
Chicago exposition in retaliation
for the McKinley tariff bill does
not seem to have any materia,
foundation, for it is said that in
the city of Leipsic, iermany,
thirty-four firms have declared
their intention of participating in
Hie Columbian j-.xposition. -Ma
meeting of the Cologne (Germany)
board of trade, June :;Oth, a resolu
tion wa? adopted asking the Im
penai commissioner lor me
Columbian Exposition to get
estimates from Chicago from re
sponsible firms for showcases, etc.,
in order to enable exhibitors to
figure more closely the probable
expenses of exhibiting.
A pECt'LiARirv of modern com
mercial transactions is the great
industries that have arisen by the
us of ice and cold storage means.
It is said that recent statistics
show an enormous development ol
the frozen meat tralo netweeii
New Zealand and England. In
1.SS2 the number of sheep ex ported
to England was only !,h:"!. In
lS'.H) the number had risen to
1,502,247. The transi: charges
now amount to on'y one and one
eight cents per pound, and it is
probable they will soon be re
duced to the even penny.
Honors seem to be dropping up
on railroad men more thickly than
upon any other class of late year".
Several have been decorated witli
titles from the sovereigns of Eu
rope. Van Horn, an American
citizen who left a railroad position
of great importance in this coun
try to accept the presidency of the
Canadian Pacific, and has become
a citizen of the British domains,
is to be made a baron. Probably
it will not add to his railroad
ctticiency but it may tickle his
vanity.
It is hardly possible to believe
that the amicable relations which
have grown up so suddenly be
tween Russia and Fiance are
nothing but an exchange of
politeness and international
courtesies. The French tleet has
been given a magnificent reception
in the harbor of Cronstadt, and
the oilieeru of the fleet are being
banqueted and feted in St. P. ters
b.irg; while on the other side
President Carnot has decided to
return to Russia the Hags captured
in the Crimea. This incident is
regarded in London as especially
gniticant.
Poktlank lumbermen have
been trying to get freight rater,
over the 1'nion Pacific into Colo
rado, at such figures as would give
them a chance to ship lumber to
that market, but have failed.
They claim that the rates are so
high as to virtually shut theui out
of the market. They now pro-
ose to appeal to the Western .
Traffic Association for relief.
The skeptics who 'fancied that
our war vessels would never in
fere with a British sealer in
Pehring tjea will have to revise
their opinions. Tho news which
comes from Victoria shows that
the poachets have been fairly
wanieil and those who persist iu
sailing inside the sea will be
captured or sunk. l'ncle Sam haG
had more patience than the case
justified, but now that he is
aroused
the poachers would do
well to avoid him.
Tub habit of the world is to
give the falling man a push and
thus acceleiate his speed. How
much better it would be if the re
verse could be made the rule, and
men could he helped over the
hard places instead of pushed
down.

The financial editor of the Paris
Figaro, who was ia I'.nglatid tl tir
ing the visit of Emperor Wiliiam,
was not favorably impressed with
the German sovereign. I Ie thinks
that the Kaiser's extreme nervous
ness is liable to cause war at al
most any time. It is not unlikely
that the contemplation of this
possibility has something to do
with the prevailing nervousness
of the French people.
A new use for the telephone has
been found. At Akron, (., an
employe of a printing house rang
up the cashier and while that
gentleman was engaged in shout
ing "hello," a confederate robbed
his desk of $2000. Ever since its
invention the telephone has been
known as a promotor of profanity,
but this is the first time it has
been used as an aid to crime.
