DOES MACHISERY CHEAP EX
LABOR.'
A feeling lias been rife among
the working men of the country
that the introduction of labor
saving machinery caused the dis
placement of laborers and the
reduction of wages. In fact in
many cases in the labor ditliculties,
the laborers have acted upon this
i lea and made active demonstra
tions agan9t the machinery. A
close study of the actual tdtuation
however, will demonstrate to
every person that such is not the
case. The Florida Times-Union
says that it should be taken into
account that the introduction of
- , - - I . . ,1
macninery aiso creates a ueuian .1
for hand labcr. For example, the
introduction of the sewing ma
chine, while bringing relief to
millions of overworked women,
deprived thousands of seamstresses
of the means by w hich they had
earned a subsistence. Yet there
was created a lare demand foi
women to run machines, and for
men to build, and sell, and repair
machines. While many women
were thrown out of employment
by the introduction ol the
machine many others were allorded
employment by the invention of
the typewriter. The typewriter
and telephone have thrown many
clerks and messengers out of em
ployment, but as many more have
found situations through the in
creasing demands of the telegraph
and railroad services, which to
gether give employment to more
than a million persons in the
United States. Thus we find
compensations wh'.-rever manual
labor has been encroached upon
by mechanical invention. Labor
saving machinery, including the
appliances for transportation,
diverts labor into new channels,
and, by direct and indirect means,
benefits all classes. By the use
of machinery thousands of articles
are produced for a email traction
of what they would cost if made
by hand. Thus they are placed
within the reach of poorer people
than could otherwise all'ord them.
Articles of necessity can be used
more freely when their price is
reduced by mechanical processes,
the cheapening of commodities
leads to increased demand for
them, and increased demand
creates increased production, and
an increase in production necessi
tates the employment of a greater
number of laborers. In India,
where the population is crowded
to an extent which would be
deemed impossible in F.urope, the
introduction of machinery has
given marked relief, especially to
the rural districts, from which
tens of thousands have been trans
ferred to factories and railroads,
they all becoming consuinors in
stead of producers of food. The
fact that there is a superabund
ance of laborers in the United
States is not owing to the exten
sive use of machinery, but to the
flooding of the country with for
eign laboieis. Very few of the
immigrants come prepared to be
employers. Nearly all want cm
p.oyment for themselves, and
must have it or starve. Thev un
dlrbi d native labor, and thus it
comes about that the number of
the poorly paid and unemployed
is very much larger than it would
be under normal conditions.
Considerable has been said by
the San Francisco papers in re
gard to the enormous amount of
potatoes that have been shipped
into that city, and the extremely
lJw prices paid or no sale being
made. The Chronicle explains
the matter as follows : The so
called glut in the potato market
has received a good deal of atten
tion during the past week, and it
has been repeatedly said that
choice potatoes were selling cither
for but a few cents a sack or nr;t
ut all. As a mutter of fact tl e
local consumer lias, despite the
alleged over supply, been oblige.!
to pay roundly for this staple
article of food. Choice potatoes
retailed in the Western Addition
at fl ::t) for a box of about 00
pounds. It is true there is a
superabundance of half-decayed
and otherwise undesirable pota
toes in the market, but for a line
article good prices must be paid.

The removal of Dr. Harry Lane
from the superintendeney of the
Asylum seems to be having a
boomerang tiled, as it is being
intimated that it was eit'ected for
the purpose of paving a political
promise made by the governor to
Mr. Raleigh chairman of the
democratic central committee in
Marion county. That gentleman
was angry with lr. Lane beeau.-e
a contract for implements for the
asylum was not awarded to the
tirin of which iie was a member,
it is said. Whether that was a
fact or not, Governor l'ennoyer
was the responsible one in his re
moval and will have to bear the
blame.
One of the mo.-t interesting
