TRYING TO KILL BLAINE.
Certain democratic newspapers
in New York seem to be making: a
desperate effort to persuade Mr.
Blaine that he cannot get well.
Tbey picture him aa suffering from
gout, dyspepsia, Brigbt's disease,
incipient paralysis, nervous pros
tration and a few other select and
mortal maladies, and the fact that
they are obliiged to contradict
themselves the next day does not
aeem to trouble tbem in the least.
It certainly looks as though these
papers were very much afraid that
Mr. Blaine will not die before the
presidential campaign of 1802, and
aa though they feared that he
would be the republican nominee.
This 'is not the first time they or j
their partisan associates have
tried to kill Air. Blaine in advance
of a national campaign. In 1S88,
when he was in Europe, before the
convention met the democratic
press had him at death's very
door. According to their stories
be then had softening of the brain
and thereatenings of appolexy,
but aa the country and the world
knows, he has since demonstrated
that bia intellectual faculties were
10 working order, and that his
bodily health was such aa to per
mit him to fulfill the onerous
duties jof secretary of state.
Whatever else may be thought,
there can be but one opinion as to
the taste of such alarmist reports,
a ad that is that it is execrable.
James G. Blaine is a distinguished
man, a foremost figure in Ameri
can public life, and a man whose
career haa earned the admiration
of the people of the United Stater.
He is widely respected for the
genuineness of his Americanism,
for his clear and comprehensive
knowledge of public affairs, for
his skill in dealing with the prob
lems of statecraft, and for the
faithfulness with which he has
performed the duties of his office.
Under such circumstances he is
certainly entitled to ' be treated
with fairness and justice, which
consists in stating bia- condition
just as it is, instead of exagger
ating his illness and depicting him
as being at the point of death.
Fortunately falsehoods of this sort
do not kill, and Mr. Blaine will
ptobably prove a very "healthy
invaljd. San Francisco Chronicle.
Tub term "fixed," applied to the
stars, is a mistake, for it is now
knowp that there is not a fixed
star in the heavens, and probably
no suV'h condition as absolute rest
in the universe. All the stars are
in motion, and some of them are
moving at the rate of 250,000 miles
an hour, or more than thrice the
velocity of our earth on its orbit.
It might be thought that this con
stant motion would produce con
tiaual changes in the stellar relations-
and alter the face of the
heavens every few years. But the
vast distances at which the stars
are set from us destroy the visual
effect of their motion, and pre
serve' tue unchanging aspect of
tne heavens. None of the con
is .
aieiiauons nave Buttered a dislo
cation in three thousand years.
Sirius, Arcturus, and the Pleiades
are still in their places. Although
the efghty one stars in Orion have
ever been in motion, each without
relation to any other, the mighty
figure is as it appeared to the men
of Ui forty centuries ago.

in tanning of cow hide, except
that a stronger combination of the
tannij ingredients is required, and
greater length of time about six
months is necessary to perform
the work. When the hide is taken
oat of the vat it is an inch and a
half thick. Among the artie'ea
made of elephant leather are
pocket-liooks, small satchels,
cigar-cases, and similar articles,
aud they are said to be expensive
luxuries. In finishing the hide,
no attempt is made to glaze or
polish it, everything being done to
preserve its natural color and ap
pearance. The leather is very en
during, several years' wear having
but little effect upon it.
As exchange says that a syn
dicate with $1,000,000 has pur
chased 112,000 acres of land in
Florida, and proposes to cultivate
the largest single farm or planta
tion in the world in growing cocoa
nuts and raising sugar. As the
cocoanut is not indigenous to the
soil of Florida, the experiment will
naturally be regarded with inter
est and, if successful, the result
may be a large addition to the
wealth and commerce of that
state.
Clouds consist simply of watei
divided into minute globules or
drops. They differ in no essential
respect from the stream emitted
by a tea kettle, or the mists and
fogs that fill river valleys at sun
lUe. These forms of water are all
produced in the same way.
It is reported that grasshoppers
are destroying all vegetation in
Calaveras county, California. In
a region eight miles long they have
destroyed fruit, corn, bean",
melons and gaidens, and al.o the
olive and fruit trees.
New York paid over 8,000.000
for the eight hundred acres of land
where Central Park Gas since been

millions more.
