A Linn count v fruit grower, who
is stayii g at the SU Charles says
the Oregouian, has this to say
about the codlin mo'li which has
appeared in that country.
'"Having bought a farm w itii an

! failed to s o any s'gnsof the moth,
it hi .iidv I:! 1 spiuysd again. At
this tin; 1 noticed m:i'.:y apples
that appeared to !; w;niy,but
upon exainin ition found ihi' the
wo: m had barely eaieu I. r ugh
the akin of the appL'. Not being
satistied as t w he.her it was trie
codlin moth or not, I began to in
qui-e of my iieiglilij!,s whether
iheir apples were wormy, and
found they were, but not so bad
as last year. My nearest neighbor
has an old orchard, similarly situ
ated as mine, and I found hisiiuit
so woimy that 1 doubt whether
he has a bushel of sound apples.
Another neighbor has an orchard
in fa r condition. There is a fence
running through it north and
south, dividing it, so there oe
about a dozen trees in oii j part,
with his plums and cherry trees,
and the other part is planed with
apple trees. The main part, or
app'e orchard, was sprayed twice
in .In ne.
Last Tuesday I examined the
fruit in this orchard and found six
apples affected wiih worms, in the
part ol the orchard that had been
sprayed. I stood oy two trees in the
part of the orchard that had not
been sprayed hnd picked wormy
apples enough to fill two coal
pockets. The work of the worms
could be seen wherever twoapi hs
touched each other or an apple
came in contact with a leaf or
branch of the tree. Fiist, 1 say
the codlin niolli is here with rein
forcements: second, those who
have failed to supply themselves
with the neceSiiary implements a
good .spiaying outlit to light this
pest will have t') eat wormy fruit.
As "eternal vigilance is the price
of liberty," so constant vigilance,
with right -emedies ai the light
times, will he the price of good
apnles hereafter. 1 am of the
opinion there is but one wc.y of
getting rid of this pest of the ap
ple. That is for the horticultural
board to see to it that every
oichard in the country is thor
oughly sprayed.

Apples will hardly be an average

A few acres of wheat have been
