The wealth and importance of
our manufacturing interests are
amazing, when taken as a whole.
Very few conceive of their growth
and value to the country. The
census report on manufactures for
1890 will show an enormous in
crease in the growth of the United
.-jtates. While this report id not
ready for publication, Mr. Porter,
jhe superintendent, in a recent in-
terview said: "The gross value
f our manufactured products dur
ing the lSlh) would probably be
18,600.000,000, an increase of
about $3,300,000,000. The capital
invested will probably reach $4,
600,000,000, and the increase dur
ing this decade exceeds the total
capital invested in 1S70. The
I wages paid will be close upon $1,
500,000,000, an addition of $500,
000,000, or $50,000,000 annually.
The number of hands employed
will be abont 3,050,000, and addi
tion to our army of wage-earners
of 900,000 during the decade. The
mining products have almost
doubled this decade, and the lum
ber interests have also increased
enormously, and the product for
18!K) will not fall far short of o00,
000,000, which exceeds byove 10D
per cent the total product returned
by the tenth census." These are
enormous figures, and they give
us some conception of the vast in
crease of our industrial interests.
The increase from 1880 to 18!)) in
the capital in vested in the manu
factures is greater than the total
capital so invested only twenty
years ago, or in 1870. The in
crease in mining and lumbering
Las been even more rapid, the
former having doubled in ten
years. It is a wonderful story of
progress that these figures tell.
Fkance indicates a disposition
to raise the embargo upon the
American hog, and allow our pork
products to be again impoited in
to that country, tiermany will
undoubtedly follow with like
action. Minister Reid in France
has pushed the matter as much
as possible and to him is due a
great deal of credit. Secretary
Husk, by his active dibits to put
in operation the law requiring an
inspection of meat products offered
for exportation, to prevent diseased
meats from being sent out, has
removed the ostensible objection
to our pork, though the real ob
jection from the first probably was
that our producers could lay it
down in the French and German
markets cheaper than the French
and German farmers could raise
I it. The American hog will event
ually tin J its way there without
doubt.
Mas with all his boasted intellect
and superiority, is often depend
ent upon brute creaiion for even
the intellectual direction of action
that will preserve his life. The
Chronicle relates a case of this
kind in mention of the story of the
prospectors who came near leav
ing their bones in Death valley
which shows the advantage of
taking along in any outfit an un
usually intelligent jack. This
animal, when his senses are well
developed, is the best guide to
water, and in the case of these
prospectors he demonstrated that
the tradition oi his keenness of
scent was not without foundation.
He found the spring in the foot
hill canyon that saved the party
from the worst of deaths.
Tub Interior says that Christian
ity is preparing the world for its
end. It has largely stopped wars.
It ia the influence back of science
which has brought pestilence un
der control. It has prolonged life,
chiefly by restraining vice. The
increase of the world's population
in the last thirty years is eiual to
the whole imputation before that
time. Another thirty years of
peace and plenty will sh.ow the
little earth packed full of people
too thick to thrive, because
animal life is subject to the same
laws, whether the genus be homo
or one lower. We have alwlished
the checks upon population. We
have killed the hostile animals.
We have put bridles in the mouths
of pestilences. We have bridged
the gaps of famine with our rail
ways and ships.
The reports that come from
.Samoa, indicate that the prince of
sinecure office holders has leen
sent to that far away island of the
sea. It seems tlat Cedarcrauz
who was sent there to act as chief
justice for the island government,
in order to keep things in working
order and prevent farther quarrel
ings, became so enervated by the
Grst snitr of the island
breezes that he has as yet failed
to organize and cpn his
court although there is urgent
call for it. He draws his salary
all the same. -
The talk in reference to Mc-
Kinley for the republican candi
date for the presidency, in case
he carries the Ohio election
strongly, for governor, is pre
mature, lie is not elected gov
ernor yet, though in all probabil
ity he will be, but the people are
too strongly entrenched in the be
lief that Ben Harrison is a pretty
good president to want any other
man for the place.
Poor old Mr. De Lessepa, who
made such a glorious success out
of the Suez canal, and such a dis
mal failure out of the Panama
ditch, is under a stress of com
plaint from the dupes he induced
to invest in that enterprise and
lose their cash. They will not
allow him to drop into oblivion,
but continue to harrass him upon
the subject.
