Luke
San Fran io, July- 15. The
Examiner this morning prints a
communication from its corres
pondent at Salton who mode the
trip by boat from Yuma to Salton
over the Colorado river and the
flooded Colorado desert. Six
miles below llanlon's the party
left the Colorado river and turned
northwest into the wide slough,
and after proceeding about 25
miles ran into a iaguna of the
Colorado river. This wan the first
place where they saw the water
leaving the Colorado river on its
way to the desert. It seemed to
be breaking out of the river in
many places. There was a bar
forming, and the correspondent
expresses the opinion the river
will probably eventually change
its channel and throw a great vol
ume of water into the desert.
There is water all over, the bottom
lands, wi.ich is a great cattle
country, and in one of the chan
nels lrom the river the water is 12
feet deep. The current continued
north and the party followed it,
the extent of the flooded district
becoming greater as they ad
vanced. At a point about ten
miles from Adams, another stream
100 feet wide and 12 feet deep
jon.ed their?. 1-or miles from heie
their course was through a biic
cegsiou of lakes connected bv
channels froi i 200 to 4 X) yards:
wiuc, and all very deep. A num
ber of waterfalls were met with
where the stream cut its way
through the sandhills. At some
distance after they entered the so-
called Salton lake proper, tney
entered another stream, supposed
to be Carresco creek. This and
the channel are the only streams
flowing into the desert. The cor
respondent states that while the
water seemed to be falling and wa?
from one to five feet deep in bal
ton lake, there is a volume of
watery which must apparently
come'!? 'rom various lakes along
the ro.ite, and that the streams
themselves are carrying much
water, tie believes a channel ie
permanently cut, and that it will
always contain water except in
the lowest stages of the Colorado
river.

Washington, Julv 16. Secre
tary Foster a few days ago con

to "round up" the clerks in the

a clerk absent on eick leave diawe

from the civil service list of ihs-"

up" the Fecretary finds that
number of clerks have been absent
for months, the only evidence ol
their existence being the occasion
al appearance of a physician's csr-
tilicaie and the regular issue 01 a
monthly check. One clerk, a
woman has not been on duty for
two years; and a chief of division
who was appointed early in the
administration reports that he has

name it on the roll. All delin
quents of this kind will be notified

She Improved Her Chances.
Cincinnati. July 15. John Rob
erts passed as a single man. tie
was i ich and courted, but to all
appearance lived a bachelor life.
A year or so aito be died. Then
came forward Miss Alice Nickert,
who claimed possession of the es
tate, worth something like $100,
000, setting up the claim that she
had for years lived with Roberts
as his wife under an assumed
name. The Roberts family started
in to fi"bt the case and it dragged
some months through the courts.
To-day Miss N'ckert accepted
$14,000 cash to drop the case. She
had secured about $20,000 from
Roberts during his life, which had
been judiciously invested in realty
and she has a lot of valuable

Connecticut aod Electrocution.
Habtford, July 15. One of the
matters which may engage the at
tention of the present Connecticut
legislature is the question of sub
stituting electricity for hanging in
the infliction of the death penalty
in this state. The refiort of the re
cent electrocution of four murder
ers at Sing Sing has led dillerent
parts of the state to the considera
tion of the subject. Representa
tive Stephens, of Bridgeport, will
probably introduce the bill. He
will be careful, however, to omit
the clause regarding secrecy, as he
regards that very un-American
idea prejudicial to the interest of
society and a diiect violation of
the constitution of the United
States, so far as it relates to the
liberty of ' the' pre?s. Ho cannot
see where the slightest good is de
rived therefrom.
Oregon's Climate.
Corvallis Leader: The blessings
of this Oregon climate can be
realized by those who read the re
ports of the deathly hot wave
banging over the Sacramento
valley at present. Many have
been prostrated by the "intense
heat, and yet we hear people prais
ing the grandeur of California
climate.

The alarming cry was repeated and
the circus employes rushed in to
force the crowd back into the tent.
Women shrieked and children
cried, wbile men lost their heads
in confusion. Pickpockets took
advantage of the opportunity to do
their work, and succeeded in
several instances. One woman
was carried to the nearest house
and a doctor summoned. Others
got off with bruises. That. so few-
were hurt in such a stampede is
wonder. The cause for the alarm
was not imaginary. An employe
went to the cage containing the
lions with a piece of meat. Open
ing the door to throw the meat
into the cage, he fell, aid the

Ottawa, Ont., Julv 15. The
lioast made when parliament met
Chat the liberals would upset the
conservative movement before the
session was over, is liable to be re
alized. Since the opening of the
investigation, tiie disclosures in
the inquiry in the public works
department have cropped up, and
to-night twoorlicers of the govern
ment are under clouds, which,
when they break, w ill probably
sweep the government left by Sir
John Macdonald out of existence.
John Ilaggait is postmaster gen
eral of the Canadian cabinet and
is credited with having a penchant
for prettv faces. It is aliout to be
disclosed" that for the past few
vears Haggart has been providing
lor Miss Craig, a young woman of
Montreal, who was atone time his
typewriter. The story goes that
he misled the girl and sent her
here, continuing her salary on the
books of the department, for w bich
she has not since given any ser
vice, at least to the government.
The whole storj will come out be
fore the committee in a day or
two. Another scandal, reahy of
rr.uch more serioubness, is the dis
appearance of the superintendent
of the printing bureau. Senecal,
who, though said to' be away sick,
is probably an absconder, as it has
been discovered that his accounts
are all mixed up, and that there is
a very large deficiency in them.
The exact amount is not known.
A clerk named McCabe was dis

Destruction.
Rochester, N. Y., Ju'y 15. At
exactly midnight last night a sharp
concussion, resembling an earth
quake, was felt all over the city.
Later it was learned that thagas
ometer of the Rochester Gaslight
Company, situated on Litchfield
street, had exploded. The gas-
oroeter was 100 feet in diameter
and fortv-five feet high, with a
capacity of 300,000 cubic feet. Tbe
tank was burled in fragments in
several different directions. One
piece struck a canal boat, injuring
the captain, whose name is un
known, s) bad'y that it is reported
he will die. Toe watchman of the
gas works is supposed to have
been killed, as he has not been
seen since the explosion. The
company has been preparing to
clear the tank, and to-day it lacked
three inches of being full of water,
with ail the vent boles in the top

OHIO DEMOCRATS
NOMINATE CAMPBELL FOR RE.
ELECTION AS GOVERNOR.
Much Palling and Hauling and
Loud Talk, but He Gets Thar
Just the Same,
Cleveland, July 15. One of the
largeet and at tbe same time most
inharmonious conventions ever
assembled in tbe history of the
Ohio democracy met this morning
in this city. Tbe renomination of
Governor Campbell has been con
ceded by his opponents since last
evening, but the sturdy determin
ation to reiuse, alter tue lormal
result should be assured, the
time-honored courtesy of a unani
mous nomination, brought dismay
in the hearts of all thoee who de
clare that in a united and harmo
nious democracy rests the only
hope of victory in . the coming
campaign. he vast music hall
in which the convr ;tion was held
was packed to its utmost capacity
long before the hour of meeting
arrived. The decorations, as
usual, consisted largely of Ameri
can colors. Suspended fcbove the
stage was a vast floral creation
bearing in letters the greeting:
"Democrats of Ohio, welcome to
Cleveland."
Chairman Norton called to order
at 10:30, and Rev. J. W. Campbell
opened with prayer. Chairman
Norton denounced republicans.
He introduced Allan W. Thurman
as temperary chairman.
In taking the chair Mr. Thur
man denounced the republican
party and its methods and espec
ially congress and McKinley, and
said :
'The time has come when the
people will express their belief in
a complete and not, a restricted
reciprocity: when they will no
longer sustain any party which
levies and collects one dollar of
taxes over and above that which
is required to wisely and econom
ically adminster the affairs of the
government ; when they will give
due notice that infant industries
that have been nursed for a hun
dred years have arrived at an age
when tney must take care ef them.
selves; when they will brand a
protective tariff as stealing, its ad
vocates as beggars, and demand
that we must have a tariff for
revenue only. I earnestly beseech
the farmers, whose interests are
identically the same as my own, to
follow this course. Vi lid schemes
of the government loaning money
upoa warehouse certificates or on
lands, taking possession of the
railways and telegraphs by govern
ment, internal improvements that
are demanded, are minor issues
that all lead, not only to greater
taxation, but to the rankest kind
of socialism. I say to put them to
one side and stick to the tariff
issue until you get what is due
you,"
The committee on permanent
organization reported that ex-Con-grestrman
Leblond had been selec
ted as permanent chairman of the
convention. The committee es
corted Leb?ond to the chair.
Chairman Leblond'a speech was
brief and to the point. He thanked
tbe convention for the honor con
ferred, and then denounced tbe
republican congress for its bad
legislation and its attempts to pass
the force bill.
General Armstrong, of Cleve
land, moved the convention adopt
the picture of a victorious rooster
as a device to designate the demo
cratic ticket, the recent ballot-reform
law requiring some device. .
The motion, was adopced by ac
clamation. An acrimonious contest was
carried on over tbe delegates from
Hamilton county.
The platform adopted opposes
the McKinley tariff; advocates an
income tax and the free coinage of
gold and silver: opposes prohibi
tory laws ; favors commercial rela
tions with Canada ; also pensions
for soldiers and denounces the
Russian persecution of the Jews.
A minority report on platform was
sat down upon.
Governor Campbell was nomina
ted for re-election, on tbe first
ballot. Lieut. Gov. W. V. Mar
quis was renomited by acclamation
and T. . Peckinbaugh for auditor.
