Auiencan play by an American of
.1 nil I It .IMS unit i"i ...di iimii-, io
the piece in which the 1 .ecne com
pany will open its return engage
ment here on Thursday of this
week. The play was written by
Win. Grillett, one of our most
celebrated Ameiican authors, and
is founded on the scenes of carnage
enacted during the 'civil var. It
appeals to the heart of every patri
otic American whose natural love
of c mntry and 1 i bet ty teaches him
to appreciate the beautiful senti
ment of a play, the object of which
is to strengthen the bond of union
between two formerly rival coun
tries, both of which, titter having
struggled for supremacy, bow do a n
and worship together, the stars
and stripes. Through tlie entire
play runs a humorous vein of de
l.glilful comedy, which, together
with the startling situations and
the wonderful horse scene, an iui
itationofa horse coming from a
distance, gradually getting nearer
until it seems thai the horse itself
must actually burst upon thest&ge
.it full gallop, renders the piece the
mo,st intensely interesting and
effective of ail the dramas which
owe their origin to incidents on
nected with the war. Theeompary
presenting the play are known to
be thoroughly hrst class and a per
formance such as we are seldom
treated to in Albany may be con
fidently expected.

About 10 o'clock Friday evening
Brakeman Allen, of the Oregon
Pacific, who resides in the eastern
portion of the city, was awakened
by a cry of lire and found his barn

dilliculty that the barn was saved.
Some wretch without fear of God
or his feliow-man, hd set a tire
under the manger, and the blaze
burned up sxeral feet before it
was finally put out. The barn
was a large one and was well
tilled with hay, and no doubt had
it burned would have taken sev
