The great disideratum of the
photographer has been to catch
the shades of color that nature
gives and reproduce them. It is
claimed now that this has been
accomplished. The Chicago News
says that closely following on M.
I.ipimian is an inventor of another
system of photographing in colors,
who proceeds on the theorv that
there are four primary colors
ifreeii, red, blue and violet. He
accordingly takes four distinct
pictures simultaneously by means
of four lenses, in front of which
respectively is a screen of one of
the four colors named. The nega
tives are developed in the ordi
nary manner, ami in throwing the
pictures on the sereen four lenses
are again used having a common
focus, each of the pictures being
projected through a screen of the
color originally used. The result
is that a picture is produced which
incl ides the colors of the original.
The Evening Telegram s.iys
that: '"An old-fashioned hang
ing, where everybody is privileged
to come and witness the execution,
will have a. more wholesome effect
than a thousand scientific experi
ments in electrocution." If the
Telegram will note cause ami
effect, it will greatly modify that
assertion. One of the acknowl
edged truisms of life as poetically
recorded is :
Vice is a monster of 6uch hideous
that to be
hated needs but to
' seen,
Yet seen to oft, familiar
with its
face,
First we pity, then endure
embrace.
then
The trueism contained in this
applies to other fields of human
lite as well as to tue vicious side
of it, and facts and statistics, if
obtainable, would show that pub
lic executions by hanging or any
(other means have been and will
jal way 8 be promoters rather than
deterrents of the taking of human
'life.
Stanley and Emin Pasha have
partially passed out of public
notice where they U3ed to occupy
so prominent a place, but occasion
ally they come up again. It is
said that the letter from Emin
1'asha w hich is printed in one of
he German newspapers gives
f ery little information in regard to
Ids work. It is characteristic of
the man that he should be satis
lied with Stanley's estimate of
himself. Most men in Kuan's
place would regard Stanley's com
'meut as deserving of reply. The
fact that Emin meekly declares it
jia not harsh goes farther than any
thing else to prove that he is the
weak-willed, vacillating caricature
of a man whom Stanley pictured
in his book and drew still more
sharply in his lectures.

Tiiu appointment of Dr. I.. L.
Rowland, to succeed Dr. Lane, as

The weather is being closely
observed now, for harvest is prac
tically on hand, and rain is not in
the line of the best interests of the
country. Heretofore, although
i here has been an unusual con
tinuance of the aeneous element
from the weeping clouds, it has
done no harm and in some cases
great good, but now it is full time
that Oregon's dry season should
be on hand, and probably it is
though signs of rain still come up.
The wheat harvest has com
menced in this vicinity, some
extra early pieces being already
in the shock. The yield will be
largely above an average, and
dealers are contracting all they
can at 75 cents per bushel. Tl e
prospects for good prices are
flattering. Many farmers have
already contracted part of their
crop at 75 cents.
