It was a delighted audience that
witnessed the performance of
Farmer J. C. Lewis in his Yankee
comedy, Si Plunkard, at the opera
house last evening, as was shown
by their hearty laughter and ap
plause. It was a novel entertain
ment, from the rustic band parade
in the aiternoon to the closing act
last night, and was intensely
funny. The band and orchestra
with the company is one of the
best ever heard in this city, and
the music was keenly enjoyed by
the large audience. Mr. Lewis
has made a great hit in the orig
inal and novel make-up of this
talented company.

A 1 .500,000-A CUE FAIOI.
It U Situateil iu Louinlana and Is
the Largest ou Earth.
The largest farm in the world is
one in the southwest of the state
of Louisiana, lueasuring 100 miles
north and south and twenty five
miles east and west. The 1,500,000
acres of which it is made up were
j purchased seven years ago fiom
he state of Louisiana and by the
L'nited States government by a
syndicate of northern capitalists,
by which it is now farmed. At
that time it wts a vast grazing
ground for the cattle of the few
dealers in the neighborhood, there
leing 30,0i:0 head of cattle and
horses upon it. This immense
tract is now divided into conve
nient pasture stations or ranches,
the foncing alone costing $50,000.
The land is best adapted to rice,
sugar corn ami cotton. All the
cultivating, ditching, etc., is done
by steam power, a tract of about
half a mile wide being taken and
and an engine placed on each side.
The enginesare portable and work
with a cable attached to four
plovs, the area plowed in this way
with the labor of only three men,
being thirty acres. Ua-rowin ,
sowing, etc., are done in the same
way and there is not a single draft
horse on the estate. Horses are,
however, used for the herdsmen
who look after the 10,000 head of
cattle upon the properly, which is
traversed for thirty-six miles by
the Southern Pacific rail war. The
1 ccmpaiiy has three steamboats
upon the MOO miles of navigable
1 waters which traverse its immense
I estate, and also possesses a ship

Hare Chance for Spinster.
There is a great chance for old
maids in theAigeutine Republic,
says the Chicago Tribune. There
are about bixteen men to one wo
man theie, and the unmarried
j males are more than anxious t)
. secuie wives. Wl en va woman.'
as they call the welcome arrival,
coints to town about fifty men
make a wild effort to secure her.
It is quite an intsresting contest,
and the one who captures the
prize is looked upon as something
of a hero. The local pipers w rite
columns about it, and about ev
erybody in the city turns out to
the wedding. It dosen't matter
much about the woman's age or
looks, she is received witu open
arms and married off in ajilfyto
st m-' real nice man. The worm
will have about fifty gxid looking
suitors to pick from, so she need
not be anxious about not finding
the kind of man she wants. The
love-making doesn't last long,
however. Three days is the usual
limit."
