The boast is frequently uiade
that the outside trade of Great
JJritian has far outstripped tiiat of
other European countries which
did not fall into the same line of
free trade as did that country
George Augustus llaig, in a recent
article in the Manchester Courier,
has shown that while the aggre
gate trade of France, Belgium,
Holland, Russia, Austria, Hun
gary, Denmark, Sweden, Norway,
Spain and Portugal showed an
expansion of every 100 in 1S54 to
342 in 1889, that of Great Britain
only grew from JC100 in 185-1 to
X27t in 1880. The Chronicle pays
that figures like these are not
calculated to strength the Cobden
contention that protection re
presses external trade, for they
demonstrate conclusively that
while England's trade has ex
panded largely, the increase oi
many of her protection rivals is
more than double that of Great
Britain. And less it might be
assumed that this method of
showing the gains is a bit of per
centage juggling, Mr. . llaig
brings out the fact that the com
bined external trade of the ten
countries indicated was in 188.)
XI, 251 ,071 ,000, as against 305,
373,000 in 1834, an increase of
$S85,G000 ; while the increase oi
Great Britain was from $208,210,
000 in 1S54 to 742,344,000 in 188H,
a gain of 474, 13 1,000. To the
Chronicle's observation might be
added that it is the duly of every
country, like the individual, to
provide for home lin t, and the
thrifty home provider never lacks
for a . purchaser for his surplus
commodities, for their excellence
brings for them buyers either at
home or abroad.
Ir is remarkable with what
ruthless hands the scientists, and
especially scientific medical men,
destroy all that is attractive and
beautiful by removing all of the
romantic ideas and feeling, by
reducing everything to plain
practical facts. Fo- instance it is
paid that young ladies are refusing
to indulge in the lovely and In
coming blush any more since a
learned doctor in Ohio has
analyzed it as follows : "A blush
is a temporary erythema ana
caloric etTulgence of - the phy
siognomy, aetiologi.ed bv the
perspectiveness of the censorium
when in a predicament of un-
equilibrity from a sense of shame,
anger or other cause, eventuating
in a paresis of the vasomotor
capillaries," etc., etc.
Matters in a Franklin, Wash.,
coal mines have assumed a very
serious turn, between the colored
miners and the white men who
struck because the colored men
were employed. The lirst of this
week actual hostilities commenced
between the two factions, a resort
being had to fire arum and two
white men, stiikers, were actually
killed and others, including two
women wounded. The militia
was called out and placed in camp
between the belligerents to main
tain the peace. It is unfoitunate
that race prejudice should be
mixed up in such matters and be
come part of its basis of a strike.
One of the recent Yale college
graduates will probably phi'-e a
full value upon his diploma, :is it
brought him a humiliating ex
perience as well a? a drain upon
his purse. A billiard bill he had
refused to pay was made the
vehicle of an attachment placed
upon the diploma and the little
bill had to be liquidated before
the diploma passed into the own
ers hands.
The Shanghai correspondent of
the London standard gets at the
bottom of a remedy for the
Chinese mission looting fiends
when he says that the wholesale
cutting off of heads lias not I:;h1
the effect of deterring the Chine te
from committing outrages on
Christians. No well-posted per
son ever expected that it would.
Human life is held too cheap in
China for erformances of that
kind to Btrike terror. The only
way to bring the Chinese to terms
is by compelling them to pay
money indemnities. Their ten
derest spot is their pocket.
The city of Philadelphia is about
to send a monster petition con
taining three hundred thousand
names to the czar of Russia,
beseeching him to deal leniently
with his political prisoners, and
making an especially strong plea
in behalf of the persecuted Jews.
Ten to one that the petition got s
no farther than the waste basket
of the police, and even if it does it
will simply cause him to grit his
teeth and apply the lash with a
firnur hand than ever.
Kx-Einpress Eugenia, of France,
makes a provision in her will, be
queathing her large fortune to
Prince Napoleon, that he desist in
a present liason and contract a
marriage with some re'gning
family of Europe. The first
should itself disbar the prince,
and the last is probably an im
possibility. Reigning houses de
sire actual Princes and not defunct
impossible ones for their alliances.
Jack the Ripper seems to be
more than an equal for the Lon
don police. A simple threat from
hini now throws them into a fever
of excitement, and his identity
remains as deep a mystery as
ever.
