The peculiarities of spirts that
are adopted by college boys, and
indulged in at the expense of
others, are the subject of cont
inent, and often of adverse criti
cism. It is true that the exuber
ance of boyish spirits must find
room to ellervesce, but it is also
true that tiue manliness and
huruade instincts that should be
developed with higher education
should direct that exuberance into
channels that will give it free
vent without injury to the persons
or feelings of others, The New
York Tribune refers to this matter
in saying: "The friends of colle
gians, after having occasion to re
joice because 'hazing' has just
been abandoned at some of the
colleges, are again discouraged by
the childish and not at all humor
ous performance of undergradu
ates at Yale and Columbia. The
throwing of torpedoes and fire
crackers at the horses and other
animals at a circus pjtrade mar
seem the the quintessence of 'fui.'
to a college boy, but he forgets
that the animals in their fright
are likely to injure persons stand
sng on the sidewalks. The Colum
bia freshmen in ridiculing and
assaulting those who apply for ad
mission to the college are even
more foolish. They probably de
sire in their soberer moments to
have their college popular and to
increase the number of under
graduates, but they take strange
methods of inviting the attend
ance of young men. The exuber
ance which the near appropch of
the long vacation excites may be
partly responsible for such out
bursts, but for the credit of them
selves and the institution with
which they are connected, the
young men should see that their
high spirits do not lead them to
acts of unseemly violence."
The efforts to preserve the use
ful wi.d animals indigenous to
this country is being persevered
in with prospects of success. Mr.
George S. Anderson, superintend
ent of the Yellowstone National
Park, writes to the Chicago acad
emy of science that there arc from
200 to 500 buffaloes now in the
park, and that the number is in
creasing, though not so rapidly as
would be the case if the animals
had some haven of refuge during
the coldest days oi wiuter. A
rapid rate ef increase is not desir
able, perhaps, but it is to be
hoped that this aboriginal breed
will not be permitted to undergo
complete extinction while the de
scendants of the European
aurochs are still to be found on
their native heath, at anv rate.
' I r is a satisfaction to know that
progress is being made in the for
eign immigration matters. The
New York Tribune says that the
United States will soon take com
plete charge of the supervision of
immigration. The few state
boards which have retained some
powers are to be superseded by
national officers under a notice
just issued by the secretary of the
treasury. The wisdom of placing
the whole matter under the con
trol of the national government
has long been acknowledged, and
it is one of the many proofs of tl e
efficiency of the present adminis
tration that it has accomplished
this reform.
According to the Chronicle
fortune-telling has received a seri
ous set back. A fortune-teller re
cently assured several New York
girls that if each wore a yellow
garter for one year they would all
get - husbands. The prophecy
came true in the case of one girl,
but she didn't enjoy her happiness
long, as her husband was sent to
Sing Sing for bigamy. If she had
cross-gartered the might have
been saved the spectacle of a
eKuse in striped clothing.
It ia said that Bob Ingersol
favors Judge Greeharn for the next
presidential incumbent. Bob id
undoubtedly a man of sense in a
great many things, and his choice
in this respect is all right, but
then he does not have the control
ing say in who shall be the next
president. Seme other people
will take a hand in that matter,
and from present indications the
name of the next president is
more likely to be Ben or James G.
than it is to be Walter (I.

The opposition to the tin plate
provisions of the new tariff law,
while it has been cairied on with
all the bitterness that partisan
bias and unfairness could insti
gate, has succeeded in doing good,
for it has stirred up the subject
j and advertised it until the produc
tion of American tin plate is an
assured fact, however much those
very opposers may deplore the
fact.
