Tlie familiar claim that illumin
ation lias tlie power to kill per-
ains cf l':aii!y sensitive nervous
organization, was never more
slrikinj;! y verified than by a serits
of cases recently reporteil from
Musootah. Kanfa.
Tlie rost-Intair'iiccr relates
tiiat in that town resideJ a family
nauied Van. lever, all of whom
were vict'-ns of excessively ner
vous temperaments. One of this
family, a highly nervous boy, had
a t xtii drawn, anil incident to the
necessity for the operation, and ;n
frightened anticipation of it, Ids
nerves were excited to tin ir high
est tension. Under such- condi
tions, as ever physic' m knw3,
this or any surgical opera! iuii is
attended with danger. In this
case the boy sutrered frightful con
tortions and t-'jnvu'.tions, and
finally t'ied.
To the ecierttilic eye and mind
the case was a clear one. His
death .vas due t his high-strung
nerves. Hut his nervous contor
tions reaemlled those incident to
hydrophobia, and served as a
reminder that nine years previous
ly a r ilf b;?!or!;iin;j; to the fam'ly
had been bitten by a ma l dog, and
had subsequently sucked a cow
whose milk the family used.
Of coarse there was no proper
connection between the two facts.
Kven if, which is ijulte unlikely
and hardly possible, the cow's
milk contained a ta'nt of hydro
phobia virus, th.it being strictly a
putrefactive poison, can only have
injurious ell'ect by direct contact
with the blood, and is devoid of
virulence when taken internally.
Uut his father, mother and the
rest of the family, seven in all.
who were as nervous as he, having
observed that his convulsions
were similar to those of the calf
came to the conclusion that the
twoevents weie related, and as
they also had partaken of the milk
they decided that they also must
die of hydrophobia. Ar.d one
after the other the whole family
died, each death continuing t'no-e
who survived, and each in suc
cession exhibiting more pro
nounced manifestations of hydro
phobia than the precoJ'ni;.
lie must indeed be a continued
skeptic who will require further
proof that with some organizations
at least imagination has power to
kill. And it is equally potent tj
make nervous people, under cer
tain conditions of excitement, see,
hear, fast', smell and feel things
that are non-existent.

Every person in the stale who
knew the stini-ii old pioneer,
Samuel Culver, who ptiished in
the severe storms of last winter in
the southern part of Ilia state by
wandering from the road and los
ing his horse in a pitfall, will bo
glad to learn that his remains
have been found and given burial.
A feeling of intense sympathy will
go out for the lonely man in his
death struggles all alone on
Klamath lake.
A woman" in C.uiada, whose hus
band had deserted her, and her
live small children, battled for the
support of the family for a year,
and then gaye up the fight by
committing suicide, jumping into
the river with her two babies in
her arms, all three being drowned.
The full sin of the act should be
visited upon the cowardly brute
who deserted his helpless chil
dren. The English court of inquiry
into the Manifur massr.cre in
India, finds that the regent was
not guilty of the murder of Com
missioner Oninton. Uut it also
found that the regent was guilty
of warring against her majesty's
government and for that sentence
him to-death. The end is the
same even if the wording is slight
ly diiTerent.
Jv'iici.nu the future by the past,
the announcement of the secretaiy
of state of the government cf
Hayli, to the eflect- that "the
country is now tranquil and will
remain" so will not carry any
great degree of significance with
i:. In fact no reliance will be
placed upon his statement, for
that island is in a chronic fctate of
revolt almost cmstattly.
The death of J. K. Houston, in
Calif Tnia on Monday, removes a
man at one time, and until his
health gave out, was prominent in

dent of Junction City, and was
grand secretary of the order of
Good Templars during the largest
grow th of that institution.
