LUUKIXU FOli THE EX D.
Human beings seem to be
possessed with an unlimited de
sire to peep into the future, to
ascertain what is coming uton the
stage of action next. Not being
able to see any farther than the
daylight of the current day will
admit of, they betake themselves
to prophecy, and actually work
themselves into a belief of the
imaginings they conjure up. The
New Orleans Picayune say 8 that
"the end of the world"' is a favor
ite theme with a large class of
religious teachars, and has been
so from time immemorial. Hut
not alone have prophecies and
speculations on this startling sub
ject been confined to religionists.
Every race of people in every age
has had its lurid predictions by
seers and oracles of the end of the
world. Thera are now living many
persons who remember the excite
ment and alarm which was pro
duced nearly fifty years ago by the
preachings of William Miller, of
New York, who declared that the
end of all flesh was near, and who
set the day of final consummation
for a date in October, 184 4. Miller
published a pamphlet entitled
"The Midnight Cry," embellished
with terrifying pictures of the
monstrous beasts which are set
forth in the apocalyptic books of
the I.ible. Since the days of
Miller have come many other in
terpreters of prophecy, who, noth
ing daunted by the failure of all
the predictions that had gone be
fore them, did not hesitate to
appoint dates for the consumma
tion of the end of the world. The
last of these is Prof. Totten, of
Yale College, who had recently
laid before the public his explana
tion of the ancient prophecies, and
has set the year l.S!i9 for the time
of the end. The data which have
been relied on to furnish a basis
for the prediction of the final day
are found in the prophecies of
laniel and in the Apocalypse of
St. John. In both those books are
set forth in detail predictions ol
events which are to occur, and
historic panorama of numerous
momentous happenings are un
folded to the view. For each set
ot events a peried of beginning
and a time of duration are set, and
at the conclusion ot the several
series of happenings the final con
summation is to come. The
prophet Daniel, while the Jews
were in captivity in Babylon, re
ceived revelations wlr.cn are
claimed to give accounts of what
was to happen down N the end of
the world, the starting point being
the command by Cyrus for the re
building of the temple at Jeru
sa'.em. There are several periods
which intervene between that
e,vent and the final consummation.
Among these are seventy weeks
supposed to end with the crucifix
ion of Christ and the subsequent
destruction of Jerusalem by the
Uonians. Then there are periods
of 1,200 days, 1,21)0 days, 2,300
days anil "a time, times and a
half time," which are also sub
divisions of the grand duration
preceding the end. Very much
he same iriods of time are also
specified in the Book of Revela
tion and students of prophecy for
a thousand years have been en
deavoring to harmonize these two
sets of data and to explain just
what is meant by the expressions
"days" ar.d "times'" used by the
sacred rriteis and to identify the
principal events that are to mark
the close of eiochs. The books
that have been written on these
subjects would fill a house, and
the various and conflicting con
clusions that have be on worked
out are almost past computation.
The result is that every date
Heretofore fixed for the end of the
world has disappointed all who
trusted in it and our old planet,
scarred and seamed with the
effects of innumerable physical
convulsions and stained with the
crimes of its inhabitants through
all the hoary centuries of its his
tory, is s' i 11 rolling around on its
path through the heavens, its
people planting, and reaping, and
carrying on their affairs as if no
terrible prediction had ever been
made.
The recent trial in the English
courts, wherein the Prince of
Wales was concerned, demon
strated the fact that even if the
officials of the realm were still
permeated with a reverence for
royalty, to the extent of forcing a
jury verdict favorable to the prince,
the people were not so inclined.
jieariy tne sympathies ana ex
pressions of the populace were in
favor of (iordon dimming, who
had the nerve to force the issue
into public view. Royalty, that
sets itself up as being of a superior
mold than the rest of humanity,
is fast lot-ing its hold, and the day
is not far distant when the inJivi
ditai'scapabilities to benefit bis
fellow .btling i, will be the measure
of his ower and fame, and
not
the mere accident of his birth, or
the amount of the dust of this
earth, metaphorically speaking,
that he can cover with his hands.
Tiik Illinois legislatuie is form
ulating a law to prevent the em
ployment of children in factories,
at labor that is too exacting and
heavy for their years. Undoubt
edly something of this kind is
demanded, and the law should be
general all over the states, for the
practice of pushing children into
work ot that nature is too general.
But if a law could be put in execu
tion that would effectually prevent
children of tender years from be
ing schooled i n the practices of
vice, from being taught the
cigarette and other demoralizing
habits, it would be of very much
more utility and benefit to the
future well being of the com
uiunit v.
The Agricultual Department
will, on or about June 13, test the
efficacy of the theory that rainfall
can be produced by exploding
dynamite carried into mid-air by
balloons. A successful test was
lately made in New York sti-te.
The exact locality in the desert for
the experiment has not been
divulged. Secietary Rusk has re
ceived many proposals to produce
rainfall for a consideration, one
distinguished scientist on the
Pacific Slope offering to do it by
using large morters for $1,000.
Ex-Senator Farwell, of Illinois, is
tne author of the plan that will be
tested in the American Desert.
