A modification of the present
banking methods in many respects
seems likely to be called f r in the
near future. Ju-t what the re
sult will be cannot be clearly
defined at present. The Provid
ence Journal speaking of this
uutter says:
"The interest of the financial
world is now centered on the
peculiar condition of the Bank of
England. The present beard of
governors were foiced by circum
stances last November to assume
obligations which are evidently a
serious tax on even its vast re
sources, and on Saturday thty
were obliged to call together the
managers of the other great banks
to take some measure to pieventj
further pressure from their credi
tors. If a bank's creditors with
draw their deposits and the capital
is tied up in loans which cannot
bj repaid, it is a question for the
t-tock holders to decide whether
they will continue business. In
this case it is not a question of s A
vency, but of continuing business
under the old method?. We have
received repeated warnings from
Lond jn that those best rusted on
the financial situation there be

of the processes by which the ex

These losses appear to have dis

issued clearing-house certificates.
When the panic-stricken find
there is no gold to be had they are
