In that of artificial light. The
tallow dip cave w ay to the fish oil
lamp and that to coal oil ami gas,
:iml now the lightnings powei has
been drawn upon, and the electric
lamp geems likely to supercede all
others.
That there ia a chtnce for
further development ia easily un
derstood. Mr. Prentis9 says that
it would hardly be supposed that
the lire-lly and the glow-woim
could give points to the electrician
in the matter of illumination. The
fitful light of the one and the
modest glow of the other do not
appear to excel in any respect the
biilliancy of the arc-linht or the
brightness of the incandescent
lamp. Professor l.angley has-i-liown,
however, that our best
sources of light are surpassed by
nature in one very important re
spect ; the production of light un
accompanied by heat. Of the
energy supplied by gas and oil
Ijr lighting purports much more
than ! per cent is given out of
heat, liven ia the electric arc
light the waste is per cent and
in the incandescent lamp VI per
cent. The insect world is much
more economical. The mot care
ful measures made with the deli
cate bolometer fail to show any
sensible heat in the light of the
lire-tly, There ia no reason why
nature should not be succefsfully
imitated in this respect, and Pro- J
fessor Hertz hopes to make a poli
tical application of his discovery
in a method of obtaining better
reeults than we now do from out
present ordinary means in getting
electrical vibrations similar in
every respect to thoHe of light but
of greater wave length. By modi
fying his original apparatus he
has some prospect of producing
waves so much shorter that a!l oi
them will be luminous; in other
words, of developing a new source
of light without heat. The result
if successful will be an entirely
new method of illumination differ
ing as widely from the electric
lights as they do from gas light
ami lamp light, ami surpassing
them all in economy and comfort
The application of electricity to
the needs and necessities of man,
grows daily. Prar.rie Farmer
mentions one of the recent ones in
relating that a moth or butterfly
is eaid to have Kecoine so trouble
some and destructive in a forest in
Bavaria that it was necessary to
destroy it. Children were em
ployed to collect the caterpillars
and were paid so much per bucket
ful. This was found expensive
and ineffective, so enormous fly
papers were tried. These also had
no appreciable result, tnally, it
is said, an electric search light in
connection with a blowing fan was
designed. The insects are at
'racted by the light and fly nsar
the lantern; they are then drawn
into the suction pipe by the air
draught ami carried to a sort of
mill which mixes them with a
little llour. The resulting com
poiind is then used for poultry
food.
A Chinese leper has been dis

certain or locate where they are
living in any numbers. They
should he excluded, and every
locality where they have gained
any considerable foothold views it
exactly in that lik'ht.
Cai.ikokxia is noted for doing
things in the largest manner pjs-
sible. One of the latest enter
prises is in connection with the
Chicago woi Id's fair, and consists
in the project of placing the tiunk
of one of the immense sequoia
trees on exhibition. A section of
a tree thirty feet in diameter is to
be taken and by the use of an
especially constructed saw of fifty
feet length, an outside shell be
taken oil" and shipped in sections,
and set up in the exposition
grounds, pieseuting the exact and
perfect appearance of the body of
the tree. The interior will be
used for exhibiting various Ca'i-fori-ia
products.

Pacflic ocean 4" miles long and

The indications are said to point
to the fact that the seals in
Alaskan waters will have to defend
themselves, this season, against
British poacl ers, as the United

them. The agreement with the
