He Meets Death Und-tr the Car Wheels
on the 8oathero Pacific Railroad
MEMORIAL DAT.
As the construction train on the
Southern Pacific approached a
small trestle between Marion and
Jefferson yesterday, morning the
mangled remains of a man were
discovered on the track. On ex
amination it was found that he
had no hat, coat or shoes and the
description was so perfect as to
leave little doubt that he was the
burglar who escajed from the Al
bany police the previous evening.
He had no doubt been run over
by the overland train. It is prob
able that some of the shots tired
at him took effect, which led to
his being killed while riding on
the break-beam.
On the remains of the itiun was
found a letter from his brother,
Mr. Harris, recorder of deeds in
Yamhill county, recounting his
bad character and telling him that
he was a disgrace to tiie familv,
and advising him to do better. It
is said he also has a brother in
Salem, when the remains were
taken for an inquest.
With one of this gang of burg
lars in jail and the other in sheol,
the country ought to have a rest
from the nu nitrous visitations of
these midnight marauders, with
which the Willamette Valley has
recent y been alllicted.
The . police of Albany deserve
much credit for having run down
the gang of burglars. They had
been watching for- them close! v for
ome time before the capture.
L.u'kk. Mnce the abovi was
written it is learned that the man
killed was a tramp named Harris,
as related in our dispatches this
mornii g, and not the escaped
burglar. His shoes were found
near by, having been torn off by
the train.

A Treat In Store fur Albany.
Col. Bain, the "silver-tongued
tuator," of Kentucky, a lecturer of
national reputation, is now making
x tour through our state, ana is
engaged to lecture twice in our
city within the next ten davs.
Precise dates will bo given later.
The opera house w ill be secured if
iKissible and the lecture will be
free, though a collection will be
expected. The colonel has lec
tured in Portland several times to
, ....
targe audiences, and Albany peo
ple will not be slow in appreciat
ing his ability. Miss Frances E.
Wiilard says of him: "I'ne
iua!ed in humor, he is also unap
proachable in pathos, logical to
the core, his rhetoric so wraps its
warmth about, his arguments tiiat
even the young and thoughtless
can hut exclaim: 'Behold these
dry bones live!' "
Vernuna .larheau Coming.
He who misses Peeing and hear
ing Vernona Jarbeau in "star
light" will have a matter for future
regret. "Starlight" is a string of
the brightest and most fopular
melodies culled from here, there
and everywhere. There is very
little dialogue, but there is plenty
of the best sort of singing. Jar
lieau hersell is generous of her
time and presence. She simniv
bubbles over with life and individ
uality. From the crown of the
head she carriea so jauntily to the
toe of the slipper ttiat sometimes
twinkle in mid-air in a manner
quite as bewitching as daring, the
characteristic fallows itself. She
sings French songs, English songs,
a topical song, dances with inimit
able abandon and laughs with an
infectiousness that no one can
resist. Her prettiest bit of acting
is perhaps in the little scene at the
piano, and her moat charmingly
rendered song, "Where Are You
Going, My Pretty Maid?" She
has a clever set of people with her
and she is not afraid to let them
make the most of their opportuni
ties. This celebrated comedienne
and her brilliant musical comedy
company, will be in tins cuy, June
1st.
