DOES IT I' AY.
Hie philosophical mind, in a
careful review of tlie operations of
human cannot, endeavor but en
tertain the question of whether
the tlevotiiu oi the t ears of human
life to the object of gaining wealth
pays or not. Judging from the
avidity with which that end is
pursued one would naturally sup-post-
that it did pay, and immense
profits too. but when all sides of
the question is viewed a far ditter
ent conclusion will be arrived at.
A recent writer says that the get
ting of wealth for wealth's sake is
surely one of the barrenent pas
times in w hich man can indulge.
To be absorbed by it, with one
foot in the grave, is one of the
most pitiful spectacles that life
c in show. There is not much en
joyment in the paths that lead to
wealth, and there is not much
happiness simply in its possession.
To be able to spend freely and
wisely is a much rarer faculty than
that of accumulation, for it implies
the possession of a certain range
of mental endowments not usua.ly
associated with a gn at talent for
money getting. The intense and
long-sustained exorcise of this lat
ter is apt to dwarf all the other
faculties of its possessor, to make
him unreccptive of new impres
sions and dead to all other im
pulses. Happy the sell-made rich
man who has kept a hobby or two
with which to till the void of his
leisure, whose tastes have grown
more refined as his packet-book
has become pletl oric, and to
whom the most terrible of all
inflictions is not to be thrown for
h's enjoyment on his own re
sources. To such there is always
a time to stop the strained ell'ort to
become richer, for such riches arc
csb'emed merely as the means to
.in end and not as an end in them
selves. Men so constituted, who
are as rare as they are fortunate,
can appreciate as thoroughly as the
poorest of us the w isdom of John
son's maxivji that the sooner a
man begins to enjoy his wealth
the better, and of Tope's
in'h' whole pleiu-iirc, a'l the jov of wnet

JJut when will humanity begin
to realize the beauty of the Golden
.Mean, of which sages have spoken
and poets sunir in all the ages?
People are accustomed to refer,
with a reverence akin to awe, to
one man's colossal income and an
other's huge jiossessions. Hut
leaving out of sight the innumer
able cares that these bring with
them, how dearly are they pur
chased by a ruintd digestion or a
diseased liver? For their owners'
happy days are usually in the im
pecunious past and thick coming
shadows of weariness, fretfulness
and unrest al! that can be dia-j
corned in the future. A million-!
aire who died the other day prized
abo.-e all human wisdom the
maxim, "Waste neither tim" nor
money."' l!;it a man may live up J
to ibis in the millionaire's sense
and yet l? a creature essentially
wretched and poor. We must
know for what uses the I'.eeting
hours an 1 the elusive dollars are
s.) jealously guarded before we
pronounce the nun either enviable
and admirable.
Horn part h1:-? are entering upon
the preliminary staiie of the presi
dential campaign in which the
country will be engaged one year
from now. It is understood that
the republican convention will he
held a month or six weeks eailier
than usual, hvt no mention it
made of an earlier date than usual
for the democratic convention.

riime. A chuckle-headed police
man the other evening saw a young
couple standing in a doorway and
kissing each other as though they
liked it, and he straightway ran
them in on a charge of being drunk
and disorderly and locked thern up
in jail for the night. It turnedout
the next day that they were hus
band and wife and were neither
drunk nor disorderly, unless in
toxicated wine of youthful affec
tion. The judge finally decided
that a man might kiss his wife in
Boston without being guilty of a
misdemeanor, so that question is
settled.
Another life has been sacrificed
to that delusion which is so erron
eouslv called Christian science. A
young lady in St. Louis, well
known in society, was attacked
with typhoid fever, and her father
who is a leading member of the
legal profession in that city, re
fused to call in medical attendance
until it was too late, and the girl
died, a victim to an idea which has
no logical, historical or scriptural
foundation. Of course the be'
lie vers in Christian science, so-
called, will sav that she might
have died even nad a doctor been
called to the case ; but the science
of medicine is so nearly always
successful in arresting the course
of typhiod fever thol the negative
argument has no validity. Chris
tian science, like some other kinds
of notional processes, works won
ders with well people, but is of
little avail where illness real I v
exisls.
Is Winchester, Indiana, recent
ly the people became so incensed
over the action of the faith curists
who allowed a child to die with
scarlet fever trying to cure it by
faith without the aid of a physician
that they arose in their wrath and
drove them out of the town. Those
faith deciples have a realizing
sense by this time that faith with
out works is a very poor article.

10 numbers of good qualities. The fol

1st. It is lastinir and durable.
2d. It does not rub off on the

3d. It is perfectly waterproof.
4th. It softens the leather to its
natural state.
5th. It gives the leather a new
and glossy appearance.
tith. It contains not one ingre

leather or stitching, but is a pre
server of them.
7th. It can be used on the finest
boots and shoes and not prevent
the use of the common boot-blacking,
but will soften and keep them
from cracking.
