It is a well known fact that the
city of Albany has the reputation
of liavinu' one of the best and most
etlieiet.t volunteer lire depart
ments of any city in the State,
and youi committee sees no reason
why our lire biys fdioilld be com
pelled to always drag the engines

a:id dirt, when they could be
hauled by horses, at an expense
not to exceed twelve dollars and
a ha'f per month, for each engine
after the necessary charges and

of base ball players, for playing
upon Sunday. A man by the

ing witness. The trial was by
jury and after a vigorous prosecu
tion and defense the jury consum

deliberation, and brought in a
verdict ol ' not guilty." The
judge charged the cost tip to

verdict that she came to her death

Hop growers of tiie Willamette
valley will have to battle with the
hop lice this year. T. P. Linton
found them in large numbers in
the yard across the river last wei-k.
He found them on the vines and
on nlum trees near the yard. He
sent a twig from the plum tree to
I'rof. F. L. Washburne, of the
State Agricultural College, who
pronounces them genuine hop lire
and says to look out fi r tin in.
Mr. Linton says they were out by
the thousands while it was raining
but Sundav when the sun was
shining not one could be seen. A
great many have said that
moisture will drive them away
but that does not seem to be the
case. They have made their ap
pearance earlier this year ;han
last, and in much greater num

vicinity met yesterday afternoon
preparatory to organizing a gun
club. An afternoon shoot n-g prac
tice was held adjoining the city
and some g'-od scores wero made.
The club is not yet fully organized,
but it will be within in a day or
two. It will be composed of about

shots will go to the state shooting
tournament at Salem on May

Yesterday was a gala day w ith
Harrisburg grange, it being the
day appointed ov that grange for
j an open or informal meeting, the
hour for meeting being 1 1 o'clock.
Iiy that time quite a goodly num
ber of patrons, together with sev
eral that were not of "the house
hold of the faithful," had congre
gated, and the meeting was called
to order by the worthy past
master, E. E.. L'pmeyer, who
stated briefly the object of the
meeting. He also stated that the
meeting would be ad
dressed by some of "our ablest
speakers," which sounded more
like sarcasm from the fact that the
first one called was the ''(nim
bler." Hut the object of this was
obvious, for the next speaker
called was Hon. It. A. Irvine, of
your city, who held the audience
in rapt attention for something
like an hour, with one of his
characteristic grange 8jeerhe., the
contrast being so great that Mr.
Cpineyer's sarcasm stood out in
bold relief.
Mr. Irvine set forth in glowing
terms the struggles and triumphs
of the grange for the last twenty
four years,together with the obsta
cles that theorder had to surmount
to reach the pioud distinction that
it claims to-day, of bei-g the fore-
most order for the elevation and
advancement of the condition of
the agricultural classes, giving due
credit to those other orders and
agfociations for the part they are
taking in trying to ameliorate the
condition of the laboring and pio
during classes.
At the close of Mr. Irvine's re
marks the ladies of Harrisburg
grange announced dinner. It is
not necessary to elaborate on this,
as it was well it was a grange
dinner, and nearly every one
knows what that means.
After dinner and an hour of
social converse, the house was
called to order, and Mr. William
Powers was called out and made
some very pointed remarks, set
ting forth w hat the grange had
done in a business way.
At the conclusion of .Mr. Powers'
remarks Mr. Thomas Froinan, ol
tirand Prairie No. 10, was called
out and stated in glowing
terms
what the grange had done in an
educational way for the fanners,
illustrating the point by hi own
case, saying that when he lirst
joined the urange he eon id not say

Kroman hardly knows where to
stop when he gets started.

A. T. Yeaton of Salem, is the
owner in fee simple of a most
wonderful pea vine. The strange
part about this species of the "gar
den sass" is that it "never dies."
The vine referred to was planted
over a year ago and is in the
height of its glory to-day, covered
with beautiful blossoms and hun
dreds of well-filled pods. Mr.
Yeaton idolizes this new vine and
is at a loss to account for its
strange action. During the past
year it has remained green and
shows no sign of dying. It holds
on likejgrini death and its owner
thinks he has secured a valuable
species of this highly-prized vege
table. The seed was secured from
out the large seed bins of "I'ncle
ferry Itusk," and Mr. Yeaton is
going to give the new liuda chance
to distinguish itseh.
