A Curious Sight,

Harrison said : "At Portland they

John T. McNutt is seeking to have
a receiver apointed for the prop
erty of the Cardiff Coal and Iron
company. At a widely advertised
sale of the company's lots a year
ago, at which over f'.KW.OOO worth
were sold, McNutt was one of the
purchasers, lt was stated then
that the company had 1 1.000,000
in the treasury to spend the fiat of
the year in public improvements.
Now that year has elapsed and the
town consists of a bank, a saloon
and a country store. The Judge
granted a writ of injunction on
the ground of the company fraudu
lently disposing of projierty aud
granting fraudulent references.

The efforts of Dr. William H.
llotchkiss, the famous occulist, to
legally rid himself of his joung
and pretty wife, have caused a big
scandal in the state courts and
have been happily defeated. In
issd Dr. llotchkiss, whose family
is wealthy and aristocratic, went
to Germany to consult a famous
specialist. While there he met
Gertiude Von Blonhuine, a pretty
little orphan, and secretly matried
her. During tbe year he was
abroad the two lived happily to
gether, but he returned home alone
promising to send for her. Arriv
ing here, he noticed a wide dirler-i-iue
between the polished circles
of his family and his friends and
bis uncultured wife, and decided
to let her stay abroad. He conae
l lently stopied all communicatiin
with her; but the plucky little
woman, thinking something must
have happened to him. started
out on his track. She traced him
for three years as he had lived un
der an assumed name, and when
she fouud him she was so rejoiced
that she w as w illing to seek em
ployment as a teacher, satisfied to
be near hinreven if her relation
ship lie not known. This contin
ued until recently, when the doc
tor's prolonged visits aroused the
suspicious of the teacher's land
lady, who went to Mrs. llotchkiss
with the information, and the
latter lady con tided to the form
er the secret of the marriage in
self-defense. The boarding-house
keeper Udd the story, and it was
soon all over the city. Mrs. llotch
kiss was terribly incensed, and as
her sou w as compelled to acknowl
edge the marriage, sue made him
institute a suit for divorce on the
ground of incompatibility and il
legal ceremony. 1 he case was de
cided yesterday in favor of the wife
and the plea dismissed. The
strange feature now is that Mrs.
Hotchkii-s has disappeared, no one
knows w here, and some think evil
has befallen her.

ticket for Montreal in his posses
sion, together with $515 of the
company's money and two checks

ailixed the signature of D. . Case,
president ot the casket company.
Ch ism's dishonesty was discovered

through a fal-se entry in the books.

bans. This discovery hastened
the arrest of the book-keeper. He
was caught just in time, as he bad
his valise packed, and was enly

to skip to Canada. Chism is a
member of the Young Men's
Christian Atajciation, and had
borne an excellent reputation.
His downfall is due to his passion
for playing the horses. When ar
