An Karly aluruing Foot Kace.
Yesterday morning a resident
I Benton county, who lives just
across the river, came to this city
in search of an ollicer. He said a
crazy man was racing about the
neighborhood with only his under
garments on, and he wanted a
warrant issued for his arrest. He
was told he would have to go ti
the county seat, Corvallis, alter it.
It was afterwards learned that tin
apparation was two Albany citi
zens, who are somewhat athletic
and who had gone across the river
in the early morning, stripped
down and were running a half
mile foot race for exercise before
breakfast.
Amputated.
The many friends of Miss Iva
Tern pie ton. of Brownsville, will
regret to learn that after ten
months of sutl'ering she has at last
been compelled to lose her injured
limb. The amputation was per
formed in Poitlami Monday at the
Good Samaritan hospital by lr.
Saylor, assisted by Irs. Cauthorn,
I'anton and Geisy. The patient
stood the operation at the timfi
very well, but duringtheafternoon
she began rapidly sinking, and
for two or three hours all reason
able hope was abandoned. Later,
however she rallied an 1 was resting
and giving every indication that
all immediate danger was passed.
A 1'usillHtlc Encounter.
A couple of young men about
town engaged in a bloody ugilis
lic encounter a few evenings ago.
They hied them to a secluded spot j
to tight with bare knuckles, with
out seconds or spectators, and
went at it. One of them drew a
knife, when the other seized a
club. The-young man with tin
knife is now said to be in Ixtd with
a broken jaw and several fractured
ribs. The atlair was lu-pt ipiiet
and no arrests were made.
Could Vnt'lie.
A dastardly trick isieported to
have taken place at the bay re
cently. All the coupling pins
were taken from the cars and
thrown, apparently, into the bay.
Some one suggested that it was the
work of a disgruntled employe, but
evidently that was a mistake. It
was too" hoodlumish a trick for
any workman to tolerate. More
likely it was the work of a tramp.

Quite an exciting inc-deiit to
one of our business men took place
yesterday afternoon. Mr. A. L.
Lamb, Mitchell, Lewis it C'o.'s
agent, was out on the Lebanon
road with his team and light
buggy. The pin holding the
whitlletrees gave way and the
horses became frightened and ran
away, overturning the buggy and
landing Air. Lamb in the ditch.
The horses ran to the stable in the
city, leaving their owner to foot it
in, which was a dillicult matter
with both ankles partially
sprained. The buggy was com
pletely demolished, which was
the only real damage.
Wuman'8 IVJ,
A woman sees more things in
heaven and earth than are
dreamed of in man's philosophy.
She's as full of swectne-s and
charity as a man is full of m it It
sense and egotism.
She can manage a man by mak
ing the vain hulk believe be man
ages her.
She can tell you better how
much principle there is in a mm
to the square inch of his lace than
you could discover by a in tilth's
dealing with him.
She will marry a man to "re
form" him, and, though clothed in
rags, declare that she is happy
with the brute.
She can't throw a stone beeau-e
she isn't built that way, but she
can fire a world of pathos into an
appeal for a new dress that ill
burst the toughest purse
strings asunder.
She is usually more adept at
making matches than at striking
them, and. while she may not
know how to sharpen a knife, she
can in two minutes hone up her
tongue in a way that will make it
sharper than a two edged sword.
She may hot be able to jump a
four-railed, fence, but she jumps :o
conclusions, and nine times out ol
ten she gets there while a ma:i is
reasoning it all out.
She can quicken a man's mental
faculties by giving him pieces of
her mind. She doesn't seem to
feel the loss, either.
True, she spends much of her
time before the glass, but. so does
a man, only his too often has a
bead on it.
According to some she was
called woman because she brought
woe to man. This interpretation,
however, is not only not scriptural
but is not borne out by the i i- ts.
She is also a conundrum, bu
we will never give her up never Y
With all her faults we love her
still.
But as she is seldom still we
shall have to throw the m antle of
charity over that one, too.
The perfect woman is a
rara avis, and should she, by any
accident, cross your path, young
man, don't be disappointed if yon
find her inquest of a perfect man.
