THE GRAPE AND ORAXCE.
Our neighbor on the aoiuli
stands at the head of the list in
very many things, among others
that of the vineyard industry
But some points of its claimed
pre-eminence is disposed to he
disputed. The Chicago Prairie
Farmer says.
The vine growing industry of the
United States is divided bv the
census bureau into five general
divisions, as follows :
First. The eastern division,
comprising about 51,000 acres in
cultivation in the states of New
York and Pennsylvania, includes
the Keuka district, Canainlaiiiiia
district, Ontario and Wayne dis
trict, .Seneca district, Cliatatnina
county (New York), and Erie
county (Pennsylvania district, and
the Hudson Riverdistrict.
Second. The middle division,
with 42,6;So acres in the States oi
Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, the
latter including the islands dis
trict, and ttie Euclid district.
Third. The western division,
with 17,300 acres in the States oi
Kansas aud Missouri.
Fourth. The southern division,
with 17.UV2 acres in Georgia, North
Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
Fiitfc. The Pacific division,
with 13,230 acres in California,
including its several districts, and
Arizona and New Mexico.
Outlide of these live districts all
other' states and territories show
upward of 60,000 acres in cultiva
tion. From this it will be seen that the
Pacific division has 25,1'J'J acres of
vinea more than all the other sec
tions of the United States. But
in the California the grapes are
used almost entirely in the pro
duction of brandy, wine and
raisins. On the contrary four
fifths of the grapes raised in the
other section of the United States
are i marketed for table use, re
quiring nearly 5,000 cars for trans
portation, and are supposed to net
more money than the whole of the
product of the Pacific division.
Taking up citrus products,
statistics show that Florida mar
kets a very much larger value than
Caliiornia. Vineyard and citrus
products being disposed of, Cali
fornia stands nowhere in general
horticulture, compared with the
other liading horticultural states.
Xeithef does this state compare
favorably in all horticultural pro
ducts ..with many of the state?
east, v&et and south. In fact, the
fruit crops alone of single states
iu the fir9t, second and fourth, or
in the miscellaneous divisions,
are worth more in the orchards
than the entire horticultural out
put of the Pacific division. As a
wine growing State California is
supreme; as an orange-growing
state, California is developing;
Diu u seems uniortunaie mat a
nomenclature should have been
adopted for the world's fair,
throughout the broad domain of
agricultural art, conceived in a
brain of ignorance or worse. If
carried on, it will, as we long ago
stated, cast ridicule upon the
status of agricultural nomenclature
of the United States if it were not
for the fact that the brainy pro
fessor who invented it will be
laughed at by brainier men who
know wliat the broad word agri
culture 'means, and what the
broad word horticulture mean.''
Talking of bridges, what would
be thought of the following: The
longest bridge in the world, it is
asserted, is the Lion bridge near
Sangang, in China. "It extends
five and one-fouith miles over an
arm of the Yellow sea, and is sup
ported by 300 huge stone arches.
The roadway is 70 feet above the
water and is inclosed in an iron
network. A marble lion 21 feet
long rests on the crown of every
pillar. The bridge was built at the
command of the Emperor Kie;g
Long, who abdicated in 1 ' on
account of old age."
The death of Kev. Dr. Bothweil
of Brooklyn points the moral of
thj danger of holding articles Lu
one's mouth. The clergyman
drew the cork from a medicine
bottle with his teeth while holding
a sick child in his arm. Another
child indulged in some antics in
order to make the little eufierer
forget the nauseous dose, and they
amused the father so much that
he burst into laughter and
swallowed the cork. Surgical
skill was unable to remove the
cork, and thus death came after
great suturing.
The suspension of the publica
tion of the West Shore is a mis
fortune to the state. For sixteen
vears it has been au attractive
ure in Oregon Journalism and
its demise will leave the held
unoccupied and of such doubtful
support as to discourage future
attempts. The monthly was all
rijrht but the weekly venture was
too expensive.
Aktek all the talk about the
jealousy of French artists because
of the tariir, a report comes from
l'aris that the two great societies
will work in harmonv and send a
full exhibit. Of course they will
The French have never been ac
cused of 9lowaess to recognize an
advantage, and this fair will be
worth a good iuany thousand

Fk.h.- are entertained that the
late rains have proven a damage
to some extent to the winter wheat
crop, by overflowing the land and
causing the wheat to scald,
