THE PiiOSl'hCTS.
Every individual is anxious to
1 e'r just as far aa possible into
the future, in order to see how the
" financial condition of the country
is to be affected, so that lie can
shape his own action to tit the
coming events and be on the safe
side in his financial ventures.
The times are dull it is said,
and yet the great throbbing ar
teries of trade are working to the
fallest extent, and prices for the
products of the farm are more firm
and better than for years.
Money may be shy just now and
hard to get, but other avenues of
human activity are in active oper
ation. We are too apt to become
blue over the surging to and fro
of the inscrutable waves of our
circulating medium and to become
frightened by its idiosyncracies.
Rut there is no occasion fur it. Even
the banking business presents no
alarming features. A late issue of
the St I ouis Globe-Democrat, in
reviewing the situation says :
Thosa who have followed up the
record of the bank clearances of
the country, as it is presented in
the daily papers every Monday,
have noticed a diminution in the
volume of these transactions for a
few weeks past. The falling ol!
last week was almost 10 per cent.
Moreover, the reduction is not
confined to New York, but is seen
in the other cities also. The fall
ing of in New York did n.it become
marked until the closing weeks of
1S!K, while the other cities, Liken
us a whole, held tin ir own until
March this year. In the cvnlr.il
west and northwest there is stiil a
slight lead over last year, and tin
same is true of the Pacific const
region and of the south, I ut in
New England, the middle states
and the southwest, there is a fali
oll", the diop in the latter region,
though being small. St. Ljuis,
w Iiicli is in the south western group
of cities shows a gain in March,
but this is overbalanced by the
great falling oil" in Kansas City
and some other places in the sec
tion. During the w hole year along
to this time St. Louis has sur
passed the record of IS'.i for the
corresponding time, and has kept
well ahead of the tigurcs of ail
other recent vears. Yet a careful
look over the circle ol our activities
reveals nothing discouraging in
the situation. The comparisons
of clearances are made with a year
in w hich the liguree were very j
near the highest mark ever
touched. The year l-S'.'O stood
particularly strong in its amount
of bank transaction. A falling off, !
therefore, to the slight extent re-
corded this year is not necessarily
a oa-I indication. Some ol the
reduction in New York and Huston
is due to the loss of activity on
the speculative exchanges. Rail
road earnings, which are a fair
index of the condition of general
trade, remain above the high
figures of a year ago, and shuw no
signs of falling bel jw the level.
P.usiness failures, ol course, are
greater than they were in the
first tiinutcr of ls!n, but not .is
much in excess as had been ex
pected. According to the statistics
of the Dun Commercial Agency
there were oJ2:! failures in the
first three months of lS'.M and
!J54- in the same time this year,
an increase of only 1X2 in number.
This is the only evidence of the
financial difficulties in l.ninlon in
November and December last
which remains. While trade in
the aggregate is somewhat -luieter
than it was at this period last
year, the general commercial and
financial conditions throughout
the country are far from being un
favorable. The Robert Kav Hauiilton rase
ajipcars to be one of tbe iK'Cu!i;ir

liiaallcgcgtliowning in the Yellow
stone, and the finding of the body
and h'al establishment of his
death. I'.tit the story is still sub
ject to doubt, in spite of its
authentication. Many believing
that Hamilton still lives and that
his disappearance and supposed
death was planned and carried out
to relieve the pride of the Hamil
ton and Schuyler families. The
Chronicle nays that the mystery
of Robert Iiav Hamilton's fate is
till as great as ever. A Wyoming
guide who in in Cheyenne repeats
the old story of the fart of positive
identiiication of the body, and the
theory of a spurious corpse is
borne out by the application of
the Hamilton and Schuyler
families to the Mayor and Alder
men of New York asking that no
place be named for the public
f jundtain, for which voting Han -
ilton left $10,000 in his will. They
base their objection to the monu
ment on "family pride,'' but the
public; will see in their action one
more bit of evidence going to show
that Hamilton is still in the land
of the living.
Tin: president has come and
gone, and Oregon has been seen
by the party in the full light of its
webfoot character, for the lain
came down in copious cvcrllow
during his entire vis:'. Very
seldom has summer lain been eo
ptrittnt in its downfall in the
Willamette Valley.
Tiik prices of farm products are
much higher than for many years.
This is probably w hat has been so
long laid at the door of theMcKin
ley bill by the free trade papers,
in their foretelling what dire
e Heels would follow the adoption
of tiiat law.
