HAS IT BEES ATT A IS ED?
The dream and work of visionary
i iv.entorB for ages haa been a r-
p:tual motion. One, or in fact,
the principal obstacle to overcome
has been friction. The Washing
ton l'ost is sanguine that the over
coming of that difficulty has been
attained. It says that a recent in
vention promises to lie more far
reaching in its immediate practical
rjsu'.ts than any which has pre
ceded it in the annals of mechani
cal discovery. It consists in the
use of hardened steel ball bearing
for all wheels, pnllies, or revolving
shafts, with a view to accelerated
speed and many other incidental
advantages by reducing friction t
a minimum and almost inappreci
able quantity. The bicycle i-ystem
of bearings furnishes an illustra
tion of the principle, but with only
partial and imperfect adaption.
Here the defects of the latter are
remedied, and the principal given
such large and apparently inimit
able scope as to foreshadow what
may not inaptly be termed the
millennium of merchanical art.
The pulleys have been in opera
tion at the power-house of the
Washington and Georgetown Rail
road Company for several weeks
have demonstrated to the satisfac
tion of a great number of scientific
and practical men, many of them
attendants upon the late patent
congress and others of high and
authoritative standing in the gov
ernment departments, that the
abolishment of friction, which has
long been the dream of a multitude
of original thinkers, is finally an
accomplished fact. Two of the
pulleys mentioned have been in
use for three weeks, carrying the
railway.cable, requiring no atten
tion, geneiating no heat and per
forming their work admirably in
all respects. Two other pulleys
have been tunning for about ten
days and twelve hours a day,
merely .for exhibition, one of which
is driven with a thread of No. 200
spool cotton to a speed of 1,'J00
revolutions per minute, without
oil or any other lubricant and
absolutely without heating; the
plane sufaces that are exjiosed to
the bearings and the bearing;
themselves beinz at no time raised
above the normal temperature if
cold steel. It is thus conclusively
shown that where no heat is de
veloped there is no friction, and il
no friction there is no wear. The
substantial merits of this new
motive appliance are apparent to
all who have observed it opera
tions. The simplicity of the
principle involved is so obvious !
that a child can understand it ; the
success of its application is so con
elusive and unanswerable a to
j disarm criticism. Spherical bear
ings, that present to a plane sur
face but one point of contract, are
practically indestructible by attri
tion. Experiment has shown that
when of proper material and con
struction they cannot be worn
away or out of shape. To t lie ap
plicability of an invention that
thus virtually ahnnilates friction,
dispels heat, and does away with
the use of lubricating oils there is
no limit. It can evidently be
mde as available for the wheels
of irailway cars as for the pulleys
thkt support the cables. It has been
already successfully introduced in
the running gear of ordinary
vehicles, to the great saving of
horse-power and entire relief from
the annoyance and unsigrrtliness
of the grease that is now the com
mon disfigurement of carriage
axles.
Jhb drive well patent swindle,
by which many an honest fanner
was robbed of bard earned dollars,
not many years ago, i? likely to be
duplicated in a similar manner.
The Scientific American haa an
illustration and a description of a
patent recently procured by John
Owen Rice of Hutchinson, Minn.
The description says that the well
is dug down to the wafer bearing
stratum, at which point is built a
reservoir of brick cement or wood,
provided with perforations to ad
mit the water, and arched over
the top. At some point in the
arched top preferably at the center
it inserted a tube which extends
from the bottom of the reservoir
to the pump above. The lower
end of the pipe being perforated to
let the water enter, and the space
above the arched top of the
reservoir is filled with stone gravel
and earth in the order named.
There are thousands of just tii-di
wells in constant use all over this
part of Oregon, and have been in
use for years and John Owen Kite
has no more right to a patent up
on them than has the man in the
moon, for he had no more to do
with originating them than did the
man in the moon. They were in
use before he was in existence.
Probably the next move in the
game w ill be to send an army of
agents all over the country to tiy
and collect a princelv fortune out
of the men who are now Using
these wells just as was done in
the drive well business. The
patent olli-.-e examiners should
have knowledge, discernment and
honesty enough t ) refuse patents
to all such devises. No man has
any right to a patent upon pro
cesses that have been in common
use, and are of universal know
ledge, simply in order to empower
him to lay tribute upon people
who are using the processes. Such
cases bring the great patent busi
ness into disrepute and disfavor.
