Pi.kasanivii.i.k, pril 3.O. The
forest tires are assuming alarmiej;
proiMjrtiotis, and have not Iteeu
oxccedctl in thirty years. To-night
tho sky is illuminated for many
miles. This morning Conovertown
and Port Republic were Bet on tire
from a locomotive, and a westerly
gale fanned the tlamea 80 that by
noon the whole forest south of
Pomona was blazing. By 2 p. ru.
tho Hames had reached Conover
ton and the citizens turned out to
tight them. Efforts were useless
and those living on the edge of
town removed their eM'eots to open
fields and watched the houses
hum. The greatest excitement
prevailed aad for some time it wait
feared the town was doomed. All
the wooded land in the direction
of the Shore road is burned. The
loss of timber alone will exceed
100,000. This evening the lire
broke out again west of Pleasant
villeandata late hour Pleasant
ville was surrounded by fire.
Mh.i.vii.i.k, X. J., April 30.
Hundreds of acres of woods have
been dest roved try lire, but most
of the farm houses were eaved.
To-night the fire is burning fiercely
near Alco. Hundreds of men are
lighting it and endeavoring to
save the buildings in its course.
Another branch is sweeping
through the avenues. The resi
dents have been lighting fire all
day and are fatigued and discour
aged. This town and the sur
rounding country are covered
with a cloud of black enioke. The
tire is above the cross road to-day
and destroyed thousands of acres
of small wood and a great etretch
of cedar swamp.

The New York Legislation Ie Ar.
ter It
AinvNv, April 30. The senat
oiuiiiittee this morning submitted
a voluminous report on the sugar
tiust investigation. It speaks
about 10 per cent dividends and
of fabulous valuations placed upon
tin; stock of constituent corpora
tion. The report says it was
plainly one of the chief purpoees
of the trust to provide for the is
suance of certilic -tes, affording an -opKti'turiity
for a great specula
tion, obviioiisly to the advantage
of persons managing the trust and
to the disadvantage to the general
public, who weie ignorant of the
secrets oi the trust. The report
questions whether the enormous
lividends have been earned in a
legitimate refining of sugar, and
calls att-ntion to the widespread
speculation in securities. It re
commended that legislation lie
had restraining the formation of
trusts as hostile to the interests of
the poople, or providing for the
formation under the supervision of
the s'ats.
