Tne grange met in regular
session. Worthy master H. C

regular meeting also the minutes
of a called meeting. N'c objections
the minutes stood approved. The
grange proceeded to ballot on the
names of lhreepersons for mem

three persons made application to
the grange to be received as mem

then conferred on a class of three
brothers.
After w-l.ich the grange
was closed iu due form. The mas

The grange was duly opened in
the third degree, and and a class
of twelve were then initiated in the
third degree.
The fourth degree was conferied
on the same class of twelve.
(hi dinner being announced all
took the fifth degree in royal style,
and seemed to enjoy it, and wished
for more of the same order.
The worthy master called the
house to order when Hro. li. A.
Irvine (assisted by Hro. S. A.
I'awson) instructed the class in
the unwritten work of the order iu
2y'ry interesting manner.
The grange then resumed busi
nesa in regular order. A resolu
tion was introduced asking the
state grange to let the representa
tion to be left as it is at present.
Several members sioke in favor of
the resol.it ion. The resolution
was adopted.
I would like to call the atten
tion of the grangers of the differ
ent counties to be up and doins;,
for there are five or six granges
that are on the upward grade, and
we would advise all the different
organizations that are in sympathy
with the farmers to work in unison,
and brother grangers let us stick
to our order, and work for the in
terest of all the P of II.
I aiu satisfied that all who were
present to-day were well paid for
the day's work done.
A vote of thanks was tendered
Bro. K. A. Irvine anil others for
their assistance in the exercises of
to-day.
Grange closed in regular order.
A Mull With Nerve.
Tiie Astoria Bulletin has this to
say in regard to a new paper that
is soon to be launched on the sea
of journalisim. Skatnokawa,
whose poetic name has been the
butt of an endless number of jests
by barn-storming actors and others
who failed to appreciate the future
greatness of that city on the slough
is to have a newspaper. The plant

lew days. The man who possessed
the required amount of nerve and

probably find it pleasanter to be

Portlano, April 23. If we take
time in this fast age to consider
what is likely to lie the consequence
when a people or community
depart from the rules of justice
and law, andal'ows individual self
interest to govern and control our
courts, then we may expect such
exhibitions of lynch law to pre

and respect for the laws of his
country. The Hose's and Olds'
are fair examples of how the law
takt s its course. Con.icted yet
not executed because of some legal
quibble hatched up by attorneys
w ho cared more for the dollars
than they did for the law and
justice. When our goveruine.it
comes hack to the lirst principles,
and tha laws are made by repre
sentatives of the people who come
from the rank and tile of the
sturdy sensible farmers and me
chanics whose clearer judgment
and unswerving patriotism is far
more reliable in the halls of con
gress than the political trickster.
Then will we have more whole
some laws and their execution will
be enforced by the necessity that
makes itself more apparent as
each successive term of court
makes the folly of such trials
more a farce than a fact. The
sophistries of lawyers should not
overbalance unrelenting justice.
The steamboat combination has
at last been broken and the citi
zens of the Iewis river are the
successful and independent ciin
pany that took the matter in their
own hands, bought a boat and are
running her w ith great profit to
Iheiuselves and great benefit to
the community. Catldaiuct has a
like scheme on foot and is likely
to be a success. The loat for The
Dalles, Portland and Astoria line
to run between The Dalles and
Cascades has been commenced
and w ill be running as soon as she
can be tinished by the contractors.
Astoria is a very independent
place owing to her isolated situa
tion, if the railroad fails to mater
ialize, the tish market does not
pan out well, and t'le other fellows
don't make a success of the boat
ing business, then ali the moss
backs, voting and old, will con
iriatulaie themselves upon their
acuteness in keeping out of all such
humbug schemes, because it costs
money "don't ye know," to build
railroads or steamboats. Tell it to
the railroad man or the marines,
but don't w hisper it to an ancient
Astorian who has tongue in his
cheek and winks his weather eye
knowingly because of his astute
ness in matters of business.
Portland is alive all over. Busi

prince down to the mechiuiic, the

The mavor savs tltin will be the
most active and successful season
that thisi ity has ever experienced.
Money is plentiiul and more
buildings will be erected than
ever Irefore, and many of them of
a very expensive character, the
cost of w hich w ill run up into the
hundreds of thousands, with eight
stories and a basement of stone,
brick, iron, slate and wood. The
most costly structures are being
built from First to Sixth back and
from Jefferson down to the big
union depot, but a general spirit
of improvement seems to prevail
to the remotest environs.
