SHOULD HE OtSSlSTEXT.
In every object sought after in
tliia life, the seekers should he
consistent as well as jiertiwieioii?.
Tiie laboring class .' houl.l e- e 'a'ly
seek in this line. The Ies Moins
Leader points out one ease in
which this consistency is not ad
hered to. It says: Some mem
bers of the lalwr unions in Mas
sachusetts have visited the
Concord reformatory school, and
discovered that its inmates
are learning blacksmithing,
carpentering, bricklaying, plumb
ing, and other trades. In
view of this state of facts, tlie
plumbers' union says: "It is
simply abominable, disgraceful,
and criminal to allow such a state
of things to continue, nud what
ever may have been the intent of
the originators, whether from mis
taken zeal as philanthropists, 01
under whatever theory may be ad
vanced, it is no less a crime if al
lowed to continue one day longer.'
There is much more of the same
tenor, closing with the demand
that such influences shall be
bioiijfit to bear "as will result in
the abolishment of this nefarious
system." The 'jonest feeling ol
all parties in the country is to as
sist labor in its ellorts fur advance
ment. The platforms and declara
tions to this etleet are not mere
pretense. Something of ileum
gogisw niay he incorporated n the
platforms, but the sympathies ol
the people at large are as we have
stated. Laboring men and their
families are a component, part of
society, and the largest factor in
it. They are as much interested
in the promotion of morality and
the prevention of crime as any
other class of citizens. The in
mates of the reformatory school, ol
which complaint is made, are boys,
many of whom are sent there for
etty ollenses. What bettei
method of reformation can be de
vised than teaching them trades of
various kinds, by which they may
become useful mcicbers of society
when their terms expire'.' The
twjys are interested in their work.
It encourages them in l:,tlits of
industry. It give them lessons in
manhood and self respect, an 1
thus lifts them out of the vaga
bondish way which sent them
there. It gives them hope that
when they emerge from their con
tinetnent their skill as haiidiciai'U
men will afford them u means o!
living and earning good wages.
Society must protect itself against
criminals, and when the most elli
oient means are taken for the pre
vention of crime, it is not for any
class of society to demur. Kight
here a pertinent question arises:
Is there not a rule among the labor
unions that no apprentice shall be
tiken without the consent of the
union? If so, is not. thisa tyranni
cal rule, a shuttin; out of boys and
young men who wish to lift them
selves out of the ranks of un
skilled labor? Much complaint is
made, and justly against the
tyranny of capital. The labor
unions in their coiuest with this
tyranny should not themselves In
come monopolists by denying to
others equal advantages with
themselves.
On the business methods of the
farmeis alliance, the I'hioii'clc
makes the following criticism.
"The Farmers' Alliance of Kansas
is said to be seriously discussing
the building and control of a
trunk line by the state. The
trouble with the alliance is that it
scatters too much. If it believes
iu government control of railroads,
why do not its members unite on
some intelligent plan for bringing
about such a result? A Kansas
trunk line acting independently ol
the rest of the raihoad systems of
the United States would not bene
fit them much. In this particular
as in tl e case of the currency, they
do not teem fo realize that there is
little chance of effecting a leforin
by trying a dozen inharmonious
plans at once. If the Kausans
would stick out for government
ownership of railroads and free
coinage of silver they would prob-1
ably accomplish something they
might be proud of." Probably
the criticisms are well taken. It
is certain that to accomplish any
rebults some line of action must
be taken and followed up consist
ently. Tiir Chronicle like all others
just a present, is watching the
sugar market and sums up as
follows: "The sugar trade has
been extremely lively since the
1st of April. A dispatch from Xew
York reports that during the first
week under the new tarill, sales in
that city footed up the unpre
cedented quantity of 1 ,7.10,000
barrels. Manufactures are work
ing day and night to till the
demand. The free trader will
probably as-uine that all of this
enoi mniislv increased consumption
is due to the cheapening of price,
but lie fore he commences to dwell
too Htrongly upon that point
we suggest that he examined
the statistics of our in
creased consumption timing the
past four or five years and that of
the rest of the world. If he gives
the ligures intelligent considera
tion he will see that protection
ridden 1'nitcd States is the only
country that has increased its con
sumption both relatively and ab
solutely during the past lew years,
the rest of the wor!d having been
compelled to restiict its use of
sweets in spite of the declining
prices."
Tiik development of the dark
continent of Africa promises to be
very materially accelerated by the
fact that water has been found un
der the Sahara desert within such
a short distance that it promises
an abundant supply, and thus robs
the desert of its terrors to travelers.
The artesian wells may yet cause
the desert to bloom as a rose gar
den, and beconis a pleasant para
dise instead of a desert of dreari
nesp.
The dead luck between the
Union I'acilicaud the contractors
on the Sound extension has been
broken, and work will be resumed.
All sub contractor will now be paid.
