tis, a bar-keeper of East Portland,
was found dead this morning at 7
o'clock.
He was employed at the l)elta
saloon, corner of Third and L
streets, and roomed in the Har
rington building, corner of Fourth
and II streets. This morning
Mrs. Voos, the wife of the propri
etor of the lodging house, went to
Curtis' room to do the usual work.
She found the door unlocked, and,
on going in, was horrified to see
the lifeless form of Curtis resting
partly on a little trunk in the
coiner of the room with his knees
on the floor. Curtis was dressed
and the bed had not been dis
turbed, indicating that he had not
retired at all. On crossing the
room she discovered a revolver on
the floor close to him, and saw
that the man had apparently shot
himself in the right eye, because
it was black and closed, while his
right cheek w as bloody and a pool
of blood was on the floor luider
his eye.
Without disturbing the liody,
Mrs. Voos called in her husband
and otl ers. Marshal Cox was
notilied and he took charge of the
body until Coroner River arrived,
w hen it was taken to Hie morgue.

Federal Grand Jury Investigating

Chicago, April 11 The inves
tigation into the alleged plot to
blo' up with dynamite the dis
tillery of H. H. Shtifel.lt by Sec
retary Gibson, of the whisky
trust was continued to-day by the
federal grand jury. Government
Ganger L'eWar, who it is alleged
Gibsou sought to bring into the
plot, and several other persons
were examined. It is said the
government has evidence to show
that the material for the explosive
compound was bought at Colbuin
& Birk's drug store in Peoria, and
that the compound was made in
the laboratory of the trust at
Peoria. Government ollicials
assert that the trust has been
using large amounts of money to
buy off the witnesses before the
grand jury, and hint that some of
the witnesses who have been ex
amined will be prosecuted for per

topic of conversation to-day ha';
been the latest report, put in cir
culation last evening, to the f fleet
that unless the American govern
ment made a speedy reply to Pre
mier Kudini's last note, Minister
Porter would be politely requeeted
to leave Komeand the Italian lega
tion would be recalled from Wash
ington. Such an attitude on the
part of the Italian government
seemed so unreasonable in view of
all tbe recent developments that
last night the report was at first
generally discredited. Many of
the newspapers, however, to day
give it prominence, and asseit the
belief that it was substantially
correct. They say America would
be allowed until April n to an
swer. Notwithstanding the enormous
deficit in the Italian treasury and
the murmuring of the taxpayers
against the heavy burden they are
already compelled to bear, the
Italian government has begun the
construction of four first-class
cruisers, work upon which will be
pushed to completion with all
possible expedition.

months ago Indian Commissioner
Morgan addressed a letter to Geo.
W. Cheyney, superintendent of
public instruction of Arizona, ask
ing if Indian children could not
be placed in the territorial public
schools, the national government
to pay the tuition fee of $10 a
quarter. The Arizona Republican
will to-morrow publish C'neyney's
reply, bearing the date of Febru
ary 15, 1891, in which he says :

seven schools in the territory but
thirty-live responded to the circu
lar letter sent them containing

article against England from the

of a disturbance among the troops
at Creslau is conlirmi'd, although
denied oflicially. The all ir is
said to have had i(s oiL'in in the
outrageous tyranny of an otlicer
of the garrison, who cut a recruit
down with his sword because hP
was not prompt in saluting. Thi:-p-ovoked
murmuring among the
other recruits, and the otlicer, see
ing w hat he considered signs of
insubordination, ran among them,
slashing right and left with his
swoi d. No one was fatally injured
although several were hurt bad
enough to lie sent to the hospital.
The otlicer was not even put undei
arrest.

fall James Freeman, aged :M, be
came engaged to marry a well
known society beile ol this city,
Miss Annie Welch. November io
was fixed as the date of the wed
ding. Miss Welch's relatives
strongly objected to her union
with Freeman, and did everything
in their power to prevent her from
meeting him. Freeman went East
to dispose of some property before
marrying. During his absence
the couple coi responded through
mutual friends. Freemen wrote
from Zebulon, G., that he had
sold a farm for $S(I00, and that it
would be neceesary for him to go
on to Portland, Me., to fur.hei
settle up his affairs. Thii was
the last that was heard
of him until tt:e other day, when
there came through the mails a
singular communication addressed
to a mutual friend, npun a piece of
dirty wrapping paper. Ill the
ban. 1'a tiling of Freeman was a
statement that he (Freeman) had
been taken into a doctor's olli e in
Portland and chloroforn e 1. When
he recovered he found himself in
a cell in a piivate insane asylum.
He had been denied writing ma
terials and had written the note
o.i some scraps and thrown it out
of the window, in the hope that
someone would find it and for
ward it. It was the third letter of
the kind he had written. In this
letter the finder said he did not
know whether the communication
amounted to anything or not, but
he had sent it to its destination in
the hoie that if any wrong had
been committed steps could be
taken to right it. Miss Welch is
in San Francisco at present.

Astoria, April 11. The follow
ing special to the Astorian is just
received:
SiA'ANn, Wash., April II. At
1 o'c oci this morning thirty or
forty mas-ked men appeared at the
countv jail and demanded admitt
ance. " The guard, William Brown,
ref .i-e.l to open the door when tho
leader of the crowd threatened to
throw advnamite boom into ihe
jail. He then became frightened
and opened the outside door, first
tiring his pistol to give the alarm.
He was then taken by five men
into the woodshed and detained
until the t a-zedy was over.
Nothing can be leaned except
irom his story, which is that
seven or eight shots were fired,
and John Kose and George Ed
wards, the Friedrickson niurder
eis, were found dead alter the
crowd had retired.
The affair did not take over
twentv minutes. No attempt was
made to force the cage, although a
sledge-hammer was found in the
jail, where it had been left.
The sheriff and coroner have
just passed through here. Every
thing was conducted in a quiet
and orderly manner. .
The opinion of many prominent
citizens heie is the wonder that
the lvnchin-' did not happen be
foie.' The coroners jury was em
