POLITIC A L SUKMISLS.
The future jiolu-al aspect of af
fairs in this country, is a mutter
of consiileraltle interest, and tl e
opinions of the leading men n the
suhject will be watched rlosely.
The Washington Star has heen in
terview ing Senator Kdnmndy upon
tlie subject.
Speaking of the Fanners Al
liance movement, the senator sai.l
'some peoole are try ing to persuade
the farmers that laws have been
made which operate unju?ily upon
them and that laws have not been
made that would furnish them w ith
more rapid and steady prosperity."
lie thinks they are to a large de
gree mistaken and in time will
discover it. And what ate the
dangers to both great parties in
the situation, the senator said :
"If in the next presidential elec
tion the farmers alliance should
carry many states, without having
a majority"of "the electoral college
there would be no election by Un
people, and the present house of
representatives, being largely
democratic, that party would elect
its candidate.' Asked if he
thought the silver bill would lit
a-i issue iu the next campaign, the
senator "did not think it would
be an issue between the republi
can and democratic parties for he
thinks the democratic party will
hardly wish to make it an, issue to
the extent of running any con
siderable risk of separating gold
and silver as the coin money of the
country, and certainly the great
Wly of republicans will not. I'p
to. the Kint of safety the repuli
lican party will he in favor of usiiti;
silver as money."
Of course the .Utterances of Sen
ator Edmunds are V be taken as
having the weight of his g:eat ex
perience and long observation, but
they are also hampered with the
fact that they present the view
from a singltt standpoint only.
Others with less experience and
knowledge may gras-p portions of
he situation unseen by the sena-
tor, and really come nearer cast
ing the part)' horoscope than does
he.
The financial situation of the
country, while it will not form a
p irtisan element, still w ill render
itself into a controlling influence.
The people have given a hint of
what they demand, and if party
leaders ignore that hint, as it
seems probable they imuj , a w hiil
.' wind of olitical upheval w ill in
' evitably land the country to the
opposite extreme of goldbug con
trol, which is shallowed as the
united policy of the dominant
parties. Free coinage is the mean
between the extremes, and the
vast majorit of the pjople de
mand it, and if the single gold
standard theory is adhered to their
will be an awakening that is not
pleasant to contemplate.

Amid all that is said upon the
temperance question, it would lie
strange if some one did not hit the
subject a fair and square lick
occasionally. The New York
Commercial Advertiser thinks that
t has found one ol those hits. It
says that I'rof. Francis". IVahody,
of Harvard, in a lecture on the
temperance question before the
Lowell Institute, of Foston. the
other day, said in substance:
There was two aspects of the liquor
question, the economic and Hu
moral. There are at resent in the
liquor traffic throughout the coun
try some i-'OO.OOO persons 1o."..Chm
in the retail and the rst whole
Hale. These ligures represent, cnly
the dealers. The number of er
sons employe! is upward of 1,000,
0 0. The worst of these horrible
lii'iiresis that thev mean the with-
diawal of just ho many person
roui the right kind of employ
ments. In their present occupa
tions they contribute little or
nothing to the wealth of the coun
try. As to the amount of liquor
consumed in 1SSG, $ ,000.000 was
spent for spirits, $:"04,000,000 for
beer, flC.OOO.IHK) for imported
wines, and $3-1 ,000,000 for domes
tic w ines a frightful totalof about
$71X1,000,000. This is one-twelfth
of the amount spent for food,
clothing, necVessaries of life. In
the same year there was received
as wagt s f.47,00i),000 ami the
liquor bill consumed two-thirds of
it. Again it costs f t"0,0iiO,000 a
year for churches, and the drink
hill would buy all the churches in
six months, i'ehind all this is
the great importance of the moral
aspect. That drink is injurious to
the person in W) cases out of
1.000 goes without proof. The
question i?: How can it be
stopped? Legislation fails of its
an is. The solution of the problem
though slid far oil', perhaps is in
each individual recognizing that
he himself is an important factor
in his community as an example,
anil adopting for himself the teach
ing: "If meat make my brother
tooll'end, I will eat no meat, lM
I make mv brother to otleiid.'
Tm-: Chionicle thinks Kditor
I Una ntirrcil up a wasp's nest
when he assaulted the Farmers'
Alliance. Hut we fancy that the
editor of the alliance organ of
tieorgia made a mistake in the
method of his attack, for it showed
conclusively that his chief griev
ance is not the fact that Dana
speaks plainly about the new
party, but because in the past he
has attacked the democrat- in
what some of them are pleased to
regard a a treacherous fashion.
In other wolds, the Farmers' Al
liance iu ieorgia is simply the
the democratic party masquerading
under a name design to fool
Northern larmers.
