appears that Fred and Thomas
liartlett knowing that McConnell
was at Irwin's house, went there
for the puriose ot killing him,
claiming he seduced their sister
under the promise of marriage,
and then married another woman.
McConvell was shot twice at the

and upstairs. He was followed
by the Lartletts and shot again.
He got out through the window
and across the prairie where he
was followed and shot twice again.
Hill and Irwin were shot whilede
fending MeConnell. Tom liartlett
is under arrest at Iirayton. All
the pa ties are well-to-do neigh
boring farmers and married, ex
cept the one that took his own
life.

ceases to regard her as a chattel,

helpmate, that a woman's con
dition, whether as wife or widow,
can become more honorable and
