who are obli!0il to j.irt with al

under cultivation is not inrreasim;.
nor is the average product per
acre, so there is no escape from
the conclusion that K'tssia, or a
large, part of it, is actually too poor
to use its own products. Of course,
a diminished product w ill reduce
the quantity vf Russian wheat
available for export, and as Kng
land has of late yeard drawn large
ly from Russia we may assume
that berjlemand will be trans
ferred to this country. If this
assumption is correct, American
tanners will be hkelv to ret a
better price for their products than
for some years.
The services of Uncle Jerry
Rusk as secretary of agriculture, in
spite of the criticisms hurled at him
seems to be acquiring prominence,
appreciation, respect and decided
worth to the country. The dis

the foreign cattle trade of the
I'nited States, for the two lirst

nearly I!2 per cent, which is a most
gratifying showing, and speaks
well for the energy and fort-sight

The matter of connecting the
continent of America by a railway
from the north to the south is
progressing in a satisfactory man
ner, and seems likely to become
an accomplished fact. The Rail
way Age says that the intercon
tinental railway commission has
made preliminary arrangements
for making a survey of the pro
posed inteivontinental railway
The priuclpal difficulty anticipated
in the survey is crossing the Andes
in Columbia. There will bo three
surveying parties, including the
military party already assigned to
Central American states, and it is
estimated that it w ill take eighteen
months to complete the survey.

Tuk World's Fair exhibit, at
Chicago, even if Oregon mid
Arkansas by their legixhttures
have refused to take any hand,
will probably excel all other ex
hibitions of that kind. .Many very
novel features are already being
talked of. For instance the Re
public of .Mexico, it is slated, w ill
make a novel display. It will con
sist of an artilicial bill of iron,
covered with terraced soil, sur
mounted by a fac-siinile of the
Castle of Chapultepee, and it will
show the progress of .Mexico from
the time of the AztecB. Temples,
images, and like scenes will be a
ieature of the exhibils al the base
of the hill.
Onk result of the Italian dis
turbance in New Orleans will be
more for reaching and decisive in
its action, than has yet lieen
hinted al. It is the fact that
direct attention has been called to
the existence of the Mafia and
other kindred societies, and that
among all the civilized nations,
a sentiment is springing up that
will in all probability stamp out of
existence these vengeance breed
ing institutions, and relegate to
the halls of eternal infamy every
compact that lxks towards assas
sination as the means of satisfying
the worst passions of human
nature. Such a consumation is
devoutly to be wished for.
PKitriNAcnv of purpose seems
to cling to the members of the
clergy of F.ngland to an extraordi
nary degree. For instance in the
matter of Sir Charles Dilke, who
was retired from public life under
the cloud of immoral reports
against him, and who having dis
proved the reports, and now desires
to again return to public life, finds
his w ay barred by the united action
of the clergymen against him. It
would seem that when he has
cleared himself from the stain that
the cause of morality would be
enhanced by ihe clergy removing
their objections, anil turning their
attention toward parties who are

Ti'K marrying record seems to
have been brokenby the English
woman, who induced forty-three

her little game was discovered,
she certainly exhibited a remark
