FALL! NU LONG DISTANCES.
The amount of mental or physi
cal suffering that immediately
precedes death has always been a
question of interest. No reporter
would think of describing an exe
cution without'atteinpting to give
an analyais'of the feelings of the
condemned man on the scaffold.
The remembrance of the death
agency of a loved one often causes
more acute agony than the idea of
eternal separation. Feople have
brooded until they were almost
driven to madness over the
thought that they might be buried
alive and awake to brief conscious
ness in their coffins. In this skep
tical and pessimistic age it is not
so much death that is feared as
. the pains that are supposed to ac
company., it. Novelists kbave at
tempted.to.depicture the thoughts
of a drowning man during the
few seconds that, intervene be
tween suhmersian and total Iocs of
- sense. One of the most graphic
pages in Victor Hugo is that in
which he imagines the sensations
of a man fallen overboard in mid
ocean while the ship is pulling out
of sight and he is gradually lapsing
into insensibility. Sympathetic
persons have speculated on the
agony of anticipation that must fill
the mind of a man falling from a
great height, and consoled them
selves with the thought that he was
dead before he struck the earth.
- Physiologists ' have interested
themselves in the general question
and especially in that in reference
to persons falling from great
heights. Persons who have been
resuscitated . after drowning or
hanging have been able to give
some description of their sensa
tions, but those who have fallen
considerable distances and esca)ed
death have not, so far as known,
thrown any valuable light on the
subject. It has been supposed
that the thrill of terror analogous
to that which any one feels when
he perceives that he is in danger
of falling and saves himself by a
sudden effort, is of such intensity
when the elevation is lofty as to
immediately arrrest the vital
function and cause death without
a moments suffering. In cases of
this kind the newspaper reorts
'usually add the consoling thought
that the victim of the accident or
suicide was probably dead before
striking the earth and consequent
ly spared both physical and mental
suffering. Th-re never seems to
'have been any s.liil foundation for
the prejudice, since it is difficult
to suppose that a rson could l
asphyxiated iu falling for three or
fwiir seconds at the rate of from 50
to 75 feet a aecond, the time it ap
proximately takes to reach the
earth from an elevation of from
250 to :W0 f?et.
The most that we can supose iu
that respiration is suspended, and
that there results a sort of syncope
or condition of partial unconscious
ness, not of sufficient duration to
cause asphyxia. Almost anyone
can hold his breath for a minute.
Persons who give public exhibi
tions remain easily under water for
two minutes, and coral and pearl
divers for more than twice that
length of time. There facia on
record to prove this view of the
case. Indtending suicides who
have thrown themselves from the
suspension bridge at Cincinnati, a
height of eighty feet, have lieen
saved. To fall this distance would
require about two second, and the
striking of the water would be the
principal thing to he considered.
A man threw himself from the
column of the Bastille, which is
150 feet in height, but falling on a
tent erected for some workmen at
the base, rebounded and struck
the sidewalk. The fall had !een
deadened in such a fashion that
though painfully bruised, he was
able to get up and walk away
shortly afterward, if not cured of
the suicidal mania, resolved,
probably, in future to seek death
by a less painful and more certain
method. The the most notable
case or survival after falling long
distances is that related by a
French writer, U. de Parville. It
is that of an East Indian living in
the island Oghin, who fell from a
cliff 300 meters feign, which is just
the altitude of the Tower Eiffel.
His fall was broken by the masses
of dense vegetation at the foot of
the precipice and he escaped with
out serious injuries. It is hardly
probable that the Eiffel Tower will
ever lie a favorite placa for suicides,
the outward slope of the walls
rendering a perpendicular fall for
any considerable distance impos
sible.
Every thoughtful well wisher of
the producing classes of the state
of Oregon, who ia also a compre
hensive and just conserver of the
rights and interests of the various
railroads of the state, will receive
with satisfaction the news that the
final action of the legislature will
be to retain and strengthen the
railroad commission. It is an
absolute necessity, and in the end
will redound just as much to the
benefit of the railroads as to the
other parties in the contracts for
carrying produce, and for the
traveling public. On the line of
keeping the commission properly
equipped with power, and of the
rieht material for the position
there should be ne backward
steps.
The legislature will adjourn at
midnight to-night. If Policeman
Simon has not got what he wants
he should ask for it in a hurry, for
the republican senators seem to
have grown tired of following the
dictation of his fine hand. The
Portland politicians have been
silly enough to allow him to scare
them into giving him his own way,
but the rest of the state say,
"hands off."
