WILL CANADA ANNEX.
Th drift of . the sentiment
among th Canadian people, when
that ' gains sufficient expression
to give publicity to that drift, is
evidently towards annexation to
this governraant. The greatest of
all convincing argument, before
which prejudice and (he most ob
stinate, aristocratic sentiment in
liateficn, will melt like the spring
snow liefore the warm summer
rains and sun, is the argument
that appeals directly to the pocket,
and that atfgament in now forcibly
placed befors the Canadian people,
in their dealings with the people
Jtba VniUd State. That argu
ment will force a decided action
in ferer of aanexntiea.
Professor Cioldwio Smith has hit
vpon the fundamental Idea of the
political situation in Canada. He
ays that while the immediate
issue is trade with the United
States, beneath this lies the
broader issue between the con
tinental and anti-continental
policy!' The Liberals of Canada,
he says, whether they look for an
Immediate entrance of Canada in
to the American Una or not, are
mow men of this continent, and
regard the inhabitants oi the rest
of it as partners, and desire to
cultivate the closest relations with
them. The conservatives, on the
othet hand, are anti-continental,
and seek to make Canada the en
gine of the conservative aristocracy
of Great Britain for averting
the triumph of the democracy of
the new world and keeping a part
of the American continent under
aristocratic institutions or the in
fluence of a conservative ptrty,
of which Sir John Macdonald is
the chief.
The Chronicle thinks that there
is not only a great deal of force in
these suggestions of Goldwin
Smith, but there is a great deal of
virility and potential energy in
the continental idea. The claim
of England to the throne of France
was abandoned ultimately not be
cause of any serious flaw in the
' pWitigree of the English claimants,
but because it was seen to be an
. absurdity that twocountriessepar
ated by the English channel
should be deemed a single mon
archy. The argument which
applied to the channel applies with
tenfold force to the Atlantic ocean.
It "is an aaomalylthat Great Britain
should rule a country across the
ocean, while that country could
do so much better for itself by
uniting its fortunes with a nation
divided from it by only a geo
eraphical boundary line.
' However much of the truth theie
may be in those ideas, and un
doubtedly there is a divinity that
"shapes our ends rough hew them
as we may," the trade question
will be the paramount one to force
an immediate solution of the
question in favor of annexation.
Tun. hosts of, the money auto
crats are hurrying to consolidate
their mightiest efforts to defeat
the free coinage of silver. The
prospects that a law of that kind
may be' passed has aroused them,
and the dogs of subterfuge, viru
lent personal abuse, and all the
powers of persuasive sophistry are
brought and applied. At a recent
meeting in opposition to free coin
age, held in the Cooper Union in
New York, a letter was read from
Ex-President Cleveland, in which
he re-iterates his gold bug doc
trine. He says: "It surely can
not be necessary for me to make a
formal expression of my agreement
with those who believe the great
est perils would be initiated by
tke adoption of any scheme em
braced in adopting the measure
now pending in congress for the
unlimited coinage of the silver of
enr nines. If we have developed
unexpected capacity for the as
similation of a largely increased
volume of currency, and even if we
have demonstrated the usefulness
of such an increase, these condi
tions fall far ehdH of insuring us
against disaster if in the present
situation we enter upon the dan
gerous and reckless experiment of
free unlimited and an independ
ent silver coinage."
Oregon's health resorts should
form one of the state's attractions
abroad, lhere is no just reason
for opposing the very modonte
appropriation of $3000 asked for
the improvement of the Soda
springs at Sodaville, which have
been dedicated to the public, and
the water of which is used free
every summer by people from all
over the state, and by healih
seekers from abroad.
The Oregon legislature has just
another week in which to conclude
its allotted forty days session. A
good many mentorious laws have
passed, and an enormously large
amount of business has been done.
A faw objectionable measures have
been gotten through by some of
the horse-traders in the legislature,
but th 3. session by the time it is
finished will have been productive
of many good laws.
The great decadence in the New
England states that has been
talked of so much does not appear
to be as bad as has been reported.
Indeed the census says that
Massachusetts increased her pop
ulation 25.57 per cent during the
last decade. This is a rate of
growth exceeded by but few states
in the Union, and shows that
things are not near so bad as some
of the advocates of free trade pro
claim.
