PENSIONS AND P EX S ION AT
TORNEYS. In the matter of legitimate pen
sions there jierhaps, but very
little objection in the entire coun
try. No fair minded man iinds
fault with the regulations that give
the deserving soldiers of the late
war a pittance for their mipoort
during the remnant of time they
have lfore them in this life. It
is the fictitious claim and the
Hhyster claim attorneys that create
an adverse sentiment in the minds
of the people.
It is said that Secretary Noble is
taking measures to expedite the
adjudication of claims in the pen
sion bureau, particular attention
Iteing given to those cases which
are not represented by attorneys
ami to the cases which fur any
reasun have been pending a long
time. There are some 12,000 eases
on a file which are not represented
by attorneys, and these will be
taken up by a board appointed
especially for the purpose and
pushed to final determination.
Claimants are to be assisted, not
hindered, and full and complete
justice to bo done in every in
stance. The Chronicle truthfully says :
This action on the part of the sec
retary is deserving of much con
sideration for two reasons. In
the first place it proposes to do
exact justice, and in the second
place it will tend to discourage the
mob of pension attorneys who
cluster about the pension bureau
like (lies about a hogshead of
molaFses and who, in many cases,
have brought scandal and discredit
on our pension system.
It is safe to say that all the
fraudulent and forced claims for
pensions which have been brought
to the bureau have been devised
and engineered by immisiou at
torneys and agents, and that the
pension system will resume its
normal condition more quie tly by
the suppression of these people
than by any other means. There
aie doubtless many honorable
men among the attorneys who de
vote themselves to this class of
business, but there are alfo a
great many shysters, and the con
duct of the latter has thrown a
clould of suspicion over the whole
fraternity of pension attorneys.
In the Illinois legislature a bill
will be introduced at this session
to suppress Schweinfurth, the
pestilent fraud of Kockford. 111.,
w ho claims to be Christ. One sec
tion provides ttat if any pereou
pretends to iosse93 divine attribu
tes, and by reason of this claim
secures possession of property,
such person shall be guilty of a
misdemeanor. This will cut the
ground from under Schweinfnrth's
"Heaven." as the thrifty adven
turer has placed all the property
of his dupes under his own name.
The Illinois pretender indulges in
the same debauchery which
marked the founder of the Oneida
community, and it is a disgrace to
Illinois if the state permits him to
continue to swindle credulous
people and to violate law and
decency.
The law of compensation will
prevail and Bell will slip out with
hia outrageous rates for the use of
telephones. The Scientific Amer
ican gives this information. "The
Bell telephone patent monopoly in
England has expired. The patent
there was granted for fourteen
years. Cheap telephones will now
prevail in England the same as in
Germany, where Bell failed to
cbtain a patent. In this count
the Bell patent will expire March
7, IS!!.'!, having been originally
granted March 7, -1870, for a" term
of seventeen years."

UNCLE SAM LOANIXU MONEY
The government money loaning
theme continues to attract, or
distract, the notice of the people
and the press. Speaking of some
attention it called out recently in
California, the Chronicle says that
tiie "state senate w hen it amended
the resolution indorsing Stanford's
loan scheme thought it was mak
ing the measure a very conserva
tive one by providing that not
more than fiQOU should he loaned
to a single individual. And yet if
the government were restricted to
this modest amount the results
might prove appalling.
In 1880 the number of farms in
the United States was stated by
the census to be 4,008,!07. As the
increase from 1S70 to lSXi) was
neatly foniteen hundred thousand,
we may safely assume that the
coming census w ill show at least
o.lHM.UK) separate farnn. P.nt to
be entirely within the mark we
will say there has been no in
crease, and that the number is
4,0fl!i,OiK. If every owner were to
call fr $.VHXi the goverment
would have to advance 4-l000,-000,000.
And it is not in the
slightest degree improbable, if fo
fijolish a scheme were set on foot,
that every farmer would want to
burrow, because it would be
cheaper to obtain money in this
way than to work for it. And he
Bides, if the borrowers defaulted in
their interest, who would under
take to collect it. Oh, it is a jolly
ftolirr for fubllrallon.
