The Old SwIiMllinc Mclieme.
Just now a great many persons
in this vicinity ar receiving
circular letters from a humbug
portrait company which has
Chicago for its headquarters Tbe
scheme, an old one, is only one
more way of extorting money from
tho unwary. The following is a
copy of the letter: "Dear Bir:
To introduce our work in your vi
cinity we will make you a ortrait
in crayon, water color, or pastel,
life size, worth $:!0, strictly speak
ing free of charge. Send us your
photo." The victim sends the
stamps and phoka, and in due
time receives a very nice letter
from the concern stating that they
hve some neat, frames that would
just answer tne purpose, and they
insist that the owner of the like
ness have them frame the picture
and send it to him. They say in
so much as they make no charges
for the picture, it being merely a
sample to jutroduce their work,
the one receiving it should place
his older with them for a frame.
Their prices are reasonable. The
unsuspecting one orders the frame
and in due time a package awaits
liia call at the express office. It
is C. O. D. for $25 or more dollars
and is accompanied by his order
for the frame. And usually, to
save trouble, the man who has
been gulled pays the bill and gets
hia free picture and cheap frame
for a big price.

Being unable to walk, it is said he
crawled on his hands and knees

LETTEE FROM ALBANY.
What a Correspondent of Eastern Oregon
Writes from Th:Clty.

writes as follows under date of the
20th ult:
There has been no snow in this
section this winter and the coldest
weather we had would hardly
freeze potatoes. Of course, we
may have lots of bad weather vet.
but the backbone of winter is
broken for the Willamette valley
this season.
Albany's charter iias been present
ed to the legislature for amendment.
The amendment will give our city
fathers some chance to do city
improvements, issue $75,000 bonds
to build sewers and a PW'l bridge
across the Willamette river at this
city.
The legislature is now all the
talk. Each man has his pockets
full of "bids,'' mostly for ap
piopriations of one kind and an
other. We hope they may not all
puss.
The "Wm. M. lloag" was the
first river steamer to come to
Albany this winter. We see no
reason why we should not have an
open river at least half of the
year, if not all the year.
Albany has enjoyed some good
theatres lately, having had several
companies that have played in
Pacific coast cities and Portland to
large house. The enterprsing
lessees of the opera house, Messrs.
Warner !fc Cranor, have been as
sociated with traveling troups, and
being well acquainted will spare
no pains to give Albany her share
of the best shows on the road at all
seasons.

The Mystery Kxplalneil .
The mysterious noises connected
with the Ainsworth blocs in Port
land are thus commented upon:
The noise is said to have ie.-em-bled
tbe moaning of the w ind in a
forest of lir trees, accompanied by
the rattling of bones. While none
of those who sull'ercd by these
disturbances were of a supersti
tious turn of mind, they were at a
loss to understand them. The re
port of these diabolical orchestra
tions coining to the ears of the
reporter who holds the chair of
"sHKkology," an investigation
was at once decided upon, and, in
order to make it as thorough as
possible, it was thought best to do
(he job in bro.ul daylight. Find
ing a single body guard in the
person of a medico, who has his
ollice not many blocks away from
the building, the reporter set out
upon his task about 4 o'clock yes
terday afternoon. A tliglit of nar
row winding sta:rs pointing sky
ward was selected as the route tor
reaching the roof. Following these
to the end. the two investigators
found themselves in a small
dingy room that is lighted by
a window of red glass. The
soft jdare of the red light
irave the apartment a rather
ghastly appearance, and the medi
co remarked, '"Me thinks 1 smell
the fumes of sulphur.'' This was
only a nasal delusion, however,
for on closer investigation it was
found that the room is a rendez
vous for camera liends. The only
door opening on to the roof from
the room was locked, so it became
necessary to remove the window.
This was done. not. without con
siderable ellotf, and then the roof
was reached without trouble. With
soft silent footsteps the two
measured the rouf. They had not
gme far when they found a h ap
of hutran bones in the northwest
corner. They were, sure enough,
human bones, ribs, arm, legs,
pelvis ami feet, but nary a skml.
The feet were still partially cover
ed w ith lleah, and fronr the loii
tapering toe-nails it was concluded
that their original owner was a
Chinaman. This then at least
explained the mystery in pari..
But w ho placed them there? The
question are t!ie strange noises
heard made by an avenging spirit?
rema'iis as deep a mystery as ever.

The first was between Glendalc
