answered, in a comment upon
what purports to have been a
statement made by director of the
mint, Leech. Mr. Leech is
credited as saying "that if the Free
Coinage bill was passed the etl'ect
would be to attract to our mints
large quantities of silver from
foreign countries, but before it
conld get here he thought the
alarm would be EO great that gold
would be withdrawn from the
treasury and hoarded by the banks,
and by the time the silver arrived
the treasury would have no gold
with which to pay for it. This
would stop the shipment, as far as
foreign countries were concerned,
as they would not ship unless they
could get gold in payment for it.'!
Here we have the extraordinary
assumution that free coinage
means the purchase of silver with
gold, when nothing of the kind is
contemplated. Bimetallism simply
demands that both gold and silver
be equally entitled to the privilege
of free coinage, and the system
conld be put into practice if every
ounce of gold in the United States
were hoarded and the treasury did
not possess twenty dollars worth
of the yellow metal. All the
bimetalllats ask is that the mints
be opened to the free coinage of
silver on the ratio fixed by law.
In that ease they will take their
bullion to the mints and obtain
silver dollars for the same. They
do not propose to sell their silver
for gold, and there is about as
much reason for assuming that
free coinage means anything of the
kind as there would bo for enp-
poeing that a man who carries gold
bullion to the mint to have it
coined intends to Fell it for silver
or paper money.
The matter of intermarriage of
white women with Indian men or
vice-versa is doubtful in its expe
diency. Perhaps it merits the full
mead of condemnation that the Alta
gives it in speaking of the case of a
young lady that it says went from
Vermont to teach in the Sioux na
tion, and is to marry a young Sioux
Indian. ." He has a college educa
tion and is a medical graduate, hut
neither implies that he is a ci vilii d
man. A savage is not to le civilized
in one generation, no matter hat
hooks he may have mastered. No
Sioux, born and reared in the
tepee, wild in blood and w ild in
life, ca" have those elements of
civilization which are none too
tenacious in our own race after
ages of inherited self-contrul and
self-respect. Other Indians have
been college bred, but soon or late
they proved to be Indians still,
and so it will be to the end of the
chapter. Intermtrriage of the
races is not worthy of encourage
ment, and it is probable that this
romantic lily maid from Vermont
will wish herself rid of her red
husband and back upon the
pumpkin pie diet of her own, her
native land. The romance of such
a marriage is revolting, no matter
what the silly and simpering may
write about it."

but the ambitious young man will
be apt to inquire how he is to
secure an opportunity to search for
the north pole. It is about as
difficult to get a place on any
Arctic expedition as on one to ex
plore Africa. Work in the Arctic
costs a large amount of money, and
unless some of our millionaires
will endow a fund for an annual
north-pole hunt Kennan's advice
can't le followed.
Albany's charter bill has paswed
both branches of the legislature,
and will becomealaw. There w ill
now be nothing to prevent the
proposed improvements in this
city growing vigorously forward
during the present year. These
improvements the building of
the bridge across the Willamette,
the construction of sewers coupled
with the nRtial volume of building
will leave no room for talk of
dull times in Albauy.
The method of government
among the nations south of us is a
standing nuisance which will per
haps remain unabated until M ixieo
becomes part of the United States.
The latter event may not happen
soon, but the manifest destinarians
are all firm believers that the
people of.Xorth America will one
day find it t their interest to live
under one ilag, and something is
bound to come from the belief.
