Mr. John A. Crawford, the well
known capitalist .of this city,
while in Portland a few days since
waa held up by foot pads, but
was not robbed. He was entering
the train in tne evening at the
East Portland station, when a big
burl; chap, one of a trio who had
been warcbiag him, stepped ahead
of him and stood in the car door.
One of the others then stepped up
immediately behind him, and
even assisted him upon the rear
platform of the coach. The third
man followed close behind, which
left Mr. Crawford surrounded by
the men. One of them thrust his
hands into his pockets, but not
finding any money attempted to
take away nia watch. Air. uraw
ford, who is vigorous in spite of
his years, raised his cane to strike
bis assailant, wnen tut Dig leuow
struck him a cowardly blow. The
men then made their -escepe.
Luckily Mr. Ciawford had but a
few dollars upon his person, and
this they did not get. Although
he is accustomed to writing his
name to checks that would make
a good fortune themselves, he has
too good judgment to allow any
great amount to be loafing in his
pockets tor foot pads.
