Oregon, respectfully represent
unto your honorable bodies that,
Whereas The Oregon State
Press Association and State Board
of Commerce and many leading
papers of the state tire taking such
action as they think will secure an
appropriation of 250,000, to be
used in making an elaborate dis
play of Oregon's products and re
sources at the Columbian Exposi
tion to be held in Chicago in )8'J3;
and
Whireas, The devastating
floods in the spring of 1890 swept
away many bridges, fences and
other property to the value of
mMlions of dollars, and was
followed by poor crops in many
localities, ana a low price tor wheat
oar staple product, have caused
haid times and very high taxes,
already levied, we deem that the
expenditure of such a large sum
at this time for this purpose is
more than the alreadr overbur
dened taxpayers ought to pay.
Therefore. We, your remontrators,
respectfully ask your honorable
bodies that this matter be care
fully considered, and that only
sucii an appropriation be made as
may be absolutely necessary and
expedient for a fair lepresen'ation
of Oregon's resources, and in no
case to exceed f50,000.

Concerning the Swedish Ladies
Concert company, which will ap
pear in this city on January 10, the
Tne St. Paul Daily Messenger says :
The Swedish Ladies' Concert
company, which charmed all who
wete fortunate enough to hear
them at their concert some two
weeks since at the People's church,
has returned to St. Paul, and will
give a concert to-night at the New
market theatre. It is a pleasure 'o
praise these ladies, so charming do
they sing. In their national songs
there is the suggestion of the fiord.

and the quiet, ureen valles of
their native land. As thev sing,
one may catch in the rehain the
expression of their never dying
love to their beautilul country
which every Swede bears with him

worn by the singers. The voic
are pure, clear, and without musi
cal conceits of any kinds. Tney
are cultivated as well, aud sing not
only the sweetold national ballads,
but difficult passages from grand
operas. Wherever the company
has appeared, it has left hundreds
of friends and admirers.

They are made chiefly for the
South American, Southern and
Western markets. The negroes
buy them with delight, and doubt
less they are traded away to Mexi
can and South American negroes
and Indians for lealiy. valuable
consideiations. The history of
articles made for the savage mark
ets would throw a curious light
upon the tracks cf modern civiliza
tion. It is not very long since
Englishmen were snppelyihg
African savages with gun barrels
of gas pipe, ornamented w ith press
ed sheet brass. These weapons
must have been highly destructive
