THE MON&Y PO WER.
The nps and downs of fortune
arc subject of absorbing inter
ttt. and form the chief cause lor
amlety with lmuian beinga. A
recant example of this nature was
furnished in the le verses that
cause to the great London firm of
bankers, the Baring Brothers &
Co. It is said that the members
of the old firm are reduced to act
ual poverty, although the institn-
, tion itself has been kept in run
ning order.
'Had not the credit of Hi firm
been sustained by the mns 'jian
tic efforts on the part ot the
ui .utyed t owers of Kngland there
would have been a crush which j
would have shaken the whole
civilized world and started panic
rolling like an avalanche down a
" mountain side. When Rust ia
drew on the Barings for the j5.
00,000 sterling on deposit it was
not on hand. It had to be found,
and there was nowhere to go for it
but to the Bank of England. The
: bauk itself could not have rendered
immediate help, for it had not .',
000,000 or even $1,000,000 in gold
to spare. An appeal was made to
the Bauk of France, and a loan of
3,000,000 in gold effected, and
witb this the immediate crash was
averted. A meeting of financiers
waa then cal!ed and resolutions
adopted for forming r guaiantee
fund to insure all Barings' :
ctptances then in circulation being
met at maturity. The national
treasury headed Die list with two
millions sterling, the Bank of
England followed with one and the
three prim-ipal joint-stock hanks
suhscrilied '.hree-ipiartcrs of a
million each. In the agreegate
eight or uiue millions sterlicg we re
guaranteed, and the credit of the
Barings was savtd, but at the
aviitice of the personal lor tunes
of all the members of t he old firm
This action was justly considered
a reinarkabledeinonstration of the
solidity of English credit institu
tions, and it offers one explana
tion of the raason why ti e con
tent between capital and labor is
usually won by the former. Capi
tal will stick together labor is
more than likely to injure and
weaken its cause by iulernal dis
sensions." But it also furnishes an example
of the perfect paucity in human
sympathy, and the milk of human
kindness of the. nuney influence.
The institution doing business
under the name of liaring Brothers
A Co., was saved, because the
financial interests of the other in
stil u iocs demanded such action,
but the individual members of the
brui were shorn ot their last penny
without compunction. No effort
was thought of for their benefit,
it was simply an action to retain
the all desotic crown upon the
head of money (hat the horcnlean
efforts were made. Verily the
man who gives himself np to the
sole put suit of money, ties himself

The Savannah News reports a
recent lecture of Bishop Becker,
in which he suggests that the girls
might find, for instance, tiie study
of chemistry lieueficial the chem
istry of the kitchen. The sugges
tion is an excellent one, but, un
fortunately, it is one that is not
popular. Most girls don't want to
go near the kitchen, and their
mothers don't insist upon their
going there. And yet girls who
expect to have charge of homes of
their own ought to know all about
kitchen and everything that is
done there. They may never have
to cook or to do anything else that
is done in the kitchen, but those
who know how to cook and to do
all other kinds of household work
will have neater and happy homes,
as a rule, than those who are
totally ignorant of these things,
and who will be wholly dependent
upon servants. And some of those
who now pride themselves upon
knowing nothingof cooking or sew
ing or anything else that is dene
in a well-regulated household, may
have all those things to do. II
they are prepared to do them, how
much lighter their task ill be,
and how much more willingly will
they beai their burdens! In a
Ixindon letter, published a few
days ago and written by one well
acquainted with the home-life of
the Princess of Wales, it was
stated that all of the daughters of
the princess were taught to cook
and sew and to do w hatever else
is expected of a capable housewife.
A portion of their education was
received in the kitchen, where
they were required to spend an
hour each day until they gained a
fair knowledged of cooking. A
wise mother is the Princess of
Wales. In the North American
Ueview for December there are
four or five articles by well-kno'vn
women, in which is discussed this
1 1 lies tion: "Shall our daughters
have dowries?" The conclusion
reached in about all of them is
that the best dowry that a wife
can tiring to ner nusoami is a
thorough knowledge of household
duties and a willingness to per
form them should there be a
necessity for her to do so. The
majority of eligible young men
have small incomes. If a yourg
mail marr'es a girl who can tighten
his burden by making their home
i comfortable one at a mall in
come he is much morn likely to
:et abaad in the wrold than if he
inui ; ies one w ho is ignorant of
household duties and thinks that
die would lose the respect of her
iriends if she Mi uld soil her hands
.itli pots and kettles or harden
them in bun Hi ng a broom. The
wi o ai -i:n. c!it that life is
not a n. i if biit eriiy existence, but
that it lui- ! t es, and who are
trained to ieiiunn these duties,
are the ones who makes the licit
w ives and the happiest homes.
