on the Southern Pacific arrived
last night eight hours late. The
delay was caused by a collision at
Portland, in which the condiictoi

of a small jeweler's alcohol lamp

Death of Abraham Dodder.
Mr. Abraham Dodder, of
i ittumwa, Iowa, died at the home
of his son George Dodder, in this
city on Saturday morning aged 05
years, 1 1 months and Its days,
lie had come to Oregon for the
purpose of visiting his sons, and
was taken with pneumonia, which
resulted fatally. His wife whs
telegraphed for, and is en route to
i his city. Besides two sons
George and W. A. Dxlder, w ho
reside heie, he leaves two daugh
ters in Kansas City, two daughters
inOttuniwa and a son in Washing

Swallows a Bottle of Landum.
About 4 o'clock last evening a
stranger appeared at the county
jaid and said he wanted to be
to locked up. He was as crazy as
a loon, and told a pitiful storv,
saying that he had taken kuil
anuni and wanted to die. He was
put to bed in one of the cells and
was soon fast asleep.
Srf eequentiy a Herald reporter,
in company with an officer called
at the jail. He was able to talk
freely and to tell his story.
He said that hia name is John
Cu tia and that he came to Albany
a week ago. He walked up from
Portland, was sick, without
money, and was unable to procure
work. On Thursday he bought
a bottle of laudanum and drank
the contents, after concealing him
self in t barn. The druu nearly
killeJ him and made him crazy.
He is an Englishman by birth,
and talks like a man who has seen
better days. He said he served in
the civil war, and is 45 years old.
Being sick, and unable to find
such li jhl work that he could do,
he became despondent, and raid
he was sorry that he did not die.
He is being cared for by the county
officers.
