The wife and daughter of a well
known timber man have been liv
ing on isolated claims near the
Nehalem valley for nearly two
years, and during thai time they
have suffered privations and hard
ships that have made the claims
seem dear to them, no matter what
their future value may be. They
have made many improvements on
the places, and have built roads
out to the county road ami in
many other ways nude tneirciaima
much more valuable titan any
others in that vicinity, taking
these things into consideration it
is not strange they should have u
desire to retain possession of the
land.
Recently three Ruemaus rode in
over the trails cut by theso settlers
and proceeded to erect cabins or.
the claims already taken by me
ladies. They finished their cabins
and then came to town and laid in
a supply of provision, and were
packing it in over the trail a lew
days ago, when they suddenly met
the husband and father of the
original settlers on their claims.
This gentleman does not waste any
words when he has a communica
tion to make, so he brought his
Winchester up to his shoulder and
cried "Halt!" aud the procession
stopped. "Now git," aid he "aud
if you ever show up in thin vicinity
again I'll fill you so full of holes
you would do for a sieve." The
would-be claim junipers stood not
on the order of their going.but tied
with all possible speed, and the
ladies are still in possession of
their ranches.

yesterday, after a bear bunt in
Washington county. Butt's creek
in the vicinity of Butt's mill, was
the ground selected as the scene for
the intended massacre, and the
country waa thoroughly worked
over. As an indisputable proof of
i he good work accomplished, Mr.
Quiinby brought back with him
the paw of a fat young black bear,
which he says he shot. Although
the hear was a very young one, it
had become so 'fat on the acorn
tiet that' it could hardly walk.
When the hounds scared up the
"varmint" it ran only about a
hundred yards before it took to a

ground, breaking its neck. The
hotel man, to make sure of his
game, immediately emptied a very

Over a hundred men viewed the
remains at the camp, and i ll pro
nounced it the fattest t-ear they
had everseen. The fat on the
neck waa fully two inches thick,
and it waa estimated that on the

pounds of bear grease.

The prisoners in
state penitentiary are going to have
a rare treat to-day. 1 he aiiiierin
tendent has in preparation, says
the .Salem Statesman, a feast that
will not be excelled on a great
many tables outbide the bars on
that day. Thursday will be a full
holiday for the prisoners, as well
as for the people generally. At
the prison it will be observed an
much as Sunday. At 10 o'clock
there will be singing in the chupel
by the prison choir, whi di ! no

A stranger, evidently an un
sophisticated easterner, called at
the puetotiice yesterday and re
ceived a letter upon which was
due two cents. "Do ou take
pennies?" he asked of' the lady
clerk in attendance, as he paid
the excess. "Oh, es," was the
teply. "1 did know the people
out here had any cents," he re
marked as he banded two coppers
through the window. The clerk
understood his remark as intended
to slander the eople here by say
ing they had no "cense, and' a
scene might have ensued had lijt
the easterner grasped the situa
tion and pleasantly apologized.

The entertainment at the opera
house last night for the benefit of
the orphans home, waa attended
by a full house, who enjoyed the
evening to the fullest extent. The
music throughout was superb and
reflected great credit upon the
perforineis. All were expectant
when Misb Moses appeared upon
the stage, and they were i.ot dis
appointed, for her rending Tilled
every exitecta ion and delighted
the audience, especially the encore
rendition (I the "Uoblins Will
Get You," so also with Miss Wil
lis, the sweet singer from Sa'em
The reputation which had preceded
her wa9 Hilly sustained, and the
audience was perfectly delighted.
The performance of the Peak
sisters was unique, laughable, en
joyable and interesting. Every
memlier of the large family of
sisters l-erforuied their parts to
perfertien, and no more enjoyable
an entertainment will be listened
to in the opera house for many a
day. The eldest and youngest
da'jg liters, Mrs. Searls and Miss
Ora Dubruille, deserve special
mention, though each one in the 1
lengthy programme, which has
been published, were perfect in
their parts. To Mr. Henry Hop
kins, who, we understand, haa
spared no pains in drilling the
ladies for the piece, the aid society,
for the success attained, and the
audience for the enjoyment of the
evening, are indebted. It was a
perfect success throughout.

expei ience in the show business
Ray L. Koyce has said :
"It is altout twelve ears since
we stilted on the road as the
Royce bell-ringers. We wer raw
hands then, but worked steadily.
Then I took Mr. Lansing in and we
formed the Royce & I jinsing Mu
sical Comedy Company, a name
which we have kept, although Mr.
f musing has not been in the com
pany for two years.
"We have always tried to give a
clean show, and I think we have
succceedad. Then, too, we have
had good financial success. This
'Tom's Vacation,' is not a play,
and we don't pretend to cu'l it a
play. It is merely a sketch intend
ed to hold together the various
specialities of our company. If
these specialities, character
sketches, songs and the like are
not well given, then the entertain
ment is a failure. Some day I
hope to get a play which in itself
will be of north, and which will
give me a chance to do something
letter than 1 have yet done. We
have had what we consider fair
success, but we are anxious to do
still better."
This is the third visit thi.-i com
pany has made Albany, and Miev
have always given a first-class,
clean and refined entertainment.

State Board of Commeice has re
ferred us to you for some informa
tion about flax culture in your
vicinity, we having an inquiry
from an eastern firm that makes
tow from flax for the use of uphol
sters or parlor furniture and
lounges. We will be greatly
obliged if you will advise us on the
following points, viz : Is the flax
grown in your vicinity within easy
hauling distance of Albany? Is
there much flax grown in your
vicinity? Is theie a prospect of
more flax there? This concern
uses the flax straw ; this therefore
would be clear gain to raisers of
flax, as the straw here, we under
stand, .8 all waste; they use it
just as it comes from the threshing
machine or floor. -

tions to you for an earlv reply.

In answer to these inquiries it
can be stated that at present Lut
little flax is grown in this vicinity.
Some is raised in the Forks of the
Santiam, about 15 miles distant,
which is grown for die seed and
cold lo the flaxmills in Salem.
Several years ago a large amount
was raised for use by the flax
factory of this city, but since the
closing of the latter the flax crop
has been small, (lax grows well
in this locality, however, and if a
market was offered for either the
seed or straw it could be raised
piotitably.and in large quantities.
A Wild Hide,
A boy, while trying to ride a
horse with simply a halter on,
frightened pedestrians last eve
ning by dw-hing down First street
on the sidewalk at a clattering
pace. The horse ran an entire
block, the boy's head narrowly
misbing several ot the twinging
signs, before he was stopped.
