After making a finding in the
matter of Lake Labish wreck and
locating the cause of the disaster,
Oregon's hoard of railroad com
missioners forwarded the follow
ing letter to Manager R. Koehler,
of the Southern Pacific's Oregon
line.
Dear Sir: Th board herewith
send to you a copy of the findings
in the matter of the wreck of train
N" . 16 at Lake Labish. In view
it' the facts developed by this in
vestigation, establishing the faulty
condition of the structure, the
itoard therefore recommends that
the same be retired in a thor
tiiKh manner throughout in all
particulars, which the findings in
dicate aa defective.

Oregon IndianAgency.
The Umatilla Indians held a
mw-wow at the agency last Thurs
day. There seems to le a general
dissatisfaction on the part of the
Indians regarding the lands. Since
the signing of the treaty under
which the allotment is made In
dians have moved on the reserva
tion, and are claiming rights a hicli
many of the Indians claim are
fraudulent. The rights of tlioe
entitled to lands under the treaty
are being infringed uyon by thot-e
coming in and claiming tribal
relations, but who are not of any
of -he tribes on the reservation.
There seems to be a determination
it the part of Indians to a?e those
persons, "whom they believe to be
interiors, put off the reset vation.

Two deaf and dumb men living
at Sweet Home engaged in a
quarrel a few days ago, wnich re
sulted in one of them being lodged
in jail .in this city on a charge of
assault.
As near an can be learned the
two men were , exchanging work,
building; a new house for each.
They disagreed about the woik
and fell to quarrelling. ' Just how
they managed to "cuss" and call
each other bad names does not ap
pear, but they grew fighting mad,
when one seized a club and the
other an axe and began their
affectionate salutations.
The result was ra'her queer, as
Henry Koeppr, who received a
black eye and some other slight
injuries, and was the only one
hurt, was arrested and lodged in
jail on a charge of assault. He
will probably give bail.
A Serlon Runaway Accident.
Two famiers named respectively
Boehringcre and Folger were driv
ing home from town with their
families. The latter tried to run
,.ast the former and his wagon
crashed into their light vehicle,
the horses being full speed. Mr.
Boehringer and his wife were both
seriously hurt, her skull being
fractured.

Almost Another Wreck.
There came 6o near being
another terrible passenger train
wreck on the Southern Pacific Sat
urday between Salem and Portland
that every passenger on the noil li
bonnd local that day waa justified
in congratulating himself when he
saw how narrow the escape from
death had been. As the train was
speeding along at New Era. and
neared the trestle, the engineer
brought the train to a sudden stop
And he applied the air brakes
none too soon, for, imprisoned on
the high trestle lews than ten feet

Had the train ran into this animal
the likelihood is that there would
have been another awful accident,
for at this place the trestle i
probably forty leet above terra
firma, and the train might very
easily have been overturned. It
was a fortunate and a nsrrow
escape. Ten feet is little distance
betwen safety and a train wreck.
