TUB BSET SUUAR BUSINESS.
One of the topics that particu
larly interests the producers of
tlrs country, at the present time,
ia the production of beet sugar.
The Chicago Prairie Farmer
says that it "has kept its readers
fully informed as to the status of
the manufacture of beet sugar in
the United States for the last
twenty-live years, including the
failures at Chatswo; th, III.. Fond
da Lac, Wis., the attempts in New
Jersey, in New Eng'and States
and in California. It is not neces
sary here to recapitulate reasons
why all these enterprise?, except
one in California, failed. The
first and great Napoleon way well
le called th father of beet-sugar
making, lie fostered the enter
prise in France. To-day more
than two-thirds of all commercial
sugar made in the world is beet
sugar made .in Europe. Many,
perhaps, ull European guveru-
mants no' exact a tax of about
five dollars per ton on the beets
raised. Not over twelve tons per
acre is sought to be grown, fiuce
large beets do not contain to hi;h
a per cent of sugar as beets of
about three-quarters of a pound
each. On the basis of twelve tons
of Icrets per acre the tax the Kii-n-pcan
governments exact is aliout
-i.xty dollars per ucrei."
It then goes on to ejy that the
huilding and operating of a fac
tory, and the growing of lieets at
Grand Island, Nebraska bus proven
to be highly succebsful, as the
iuality of pure i-ugar was pro
duced. The factories are to be
enlarged, aud numerous branch
ones ntaited. In conclusion it
.iy8 that the present season in
.Nebraska bus proved to be the
driest known for seventeen years,
and Nome farmers failed 'o ruine
not only t orn and small grains in
paying quantities, but beets as
well. Many, however, have raised
crops which show a net prntitof
$20 to 00 ier acre.
Tailing all theiie facts into con
sideration will it not pay to in
vestigate the subject, and, take
advantage of the most favorable
conditions in Oregon for this
great industry.
